Background: The emerging cases of childhood scarlet fever (SF) and worsening air pollution problems in Chinese cities suggests a potential linkage between them. However, few studies had explored this association in a large childhood population.
Methods: We conducted a time-series analysis using the daily count of SF and the daily concentrations of particulate matters with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 (PM) and 10 (PM), as well as nitrogen dioxide (NO) in Hangzhou, China from 2014 to 2018. Distributed lag nonlinear models were used to estimate the lag effects of PM, PM and NO for a maximum lag of 10 days, which were quantified using relative risk (RR) comparing the adjusted risks at the 2.5th (extremely low effect) and 97.5th (extremely high effect) percentiles of concentration of the three air pollutants to that at the median. Stratified RRs by sex were also reported.
Results: Using the median concentration as reference, for extremely high effect, the RR was the highest on lag days 5, 6, and 3 for PM, PM, and NO respectively. While on lag day 0, the RR of PM, PM, and NO were 1.04 (95%CI: 0.90-1.20), 1.07 (95%CI: 0.92-1.24), and 1.08 (95%CI: 0.92-1.26) respectively, the RRs increased constantly and cumulatively to the maximum values of 1.88 (95%CI: 1.33-2.66), 1.82 (95%CI: 1.29-2.55), and 2.19 (95%CI: 1.47-3.27) for PM, PM, and NO respectively on lag day 10. Subgroup analyses showed that females appeared to be more vulnerable to the three pollutants than males.
Conclusion: Our study provides evidence that PM, PM, and NO exert delayed effects on SF infection.

Background: Pathobiology of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with changes among respiratory epithelium structure and function. Increased levels of PM from urban particulate matter (UPM) are correlated with enlarged rate of asthma and COPD morbidity as well as acute disease exacerbation. It has been suggested that pre-existing pulmonary obstructive diseases predispose epithelium for different biological response than in healthy airways.

p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) antioxidants and their quinone derivatives (PPDQs), as hot-spot novel contaminants in recent years, have been detected in air fine particulate matters (PM) in multiple regions. However, current research all discussed the pollution of PPDs and PPDQs based on the collected PM samples at least in one day (23.5 h).

Urbanization and industrialization have drastically increased ambient air pollution in urban areas globally from vehicle emissions, solid fuel combustion and industrial activities leading to some of the worst air quality conditions. Air pollution in Ghana causes approximately 28,000 premature deaths and disabilities annually, ranking as a leading cause of mortality and disability-adjusted life years. This study evaluated the annual concentrations of PM NO and O in the ambient air of 57 cities in Ghana for two decades using historical and forecasted data from satellite measurements.

Coastal wetlands contain very large carbon (C) stocks-termed as blue C-and their management has emerged as a promising nature-based solution for climate adaptation and mitigation. The interactions among sources, pools, and molecular compositions of soil organic C (SOC) within blue C ecosystems (BCEs) remain elusive. Here, we explore these interactions along an 18,000 km long coastal line of salt marshes, mangroves, and seagrasses in China.

Background: The ocular surface is directly exposed to environmental influences. Noxae that have already been identified for the ocular surface are heat, air dryness, pollutant gases, fine dust particles and ultraviolet radiation.
Methods: The current literature was used to investigate the relationship between frequent ocular surface diseases and various environmental factors and to analyze their development over the years.
