Ethnic minorities in disadvantaged neighborhoods: Differential effects on educational outcomes.

The recent influx of immigrants to affluent Western societies over past decades has spurred a massive political and academic interest in immigrant integration. In this paper, we explore the role of neighborhoods in this integration process using population-wide Norwegian register data. Our findings reveal considerable socioeconomic disparities in neighborhood conditions among children from different immigrant backgrounds, underscoring the unequal opportunities experienced by these groups.

Traditional perspectives on occupational structure often emphasize hierarchical and socio-economic dimensions, typically reducing it to a one-dimensional framework. As noted in much previous research, this simplification may overlook the complexity of critical social issues. We argue that occupational structure is inherently continuous and multidimensional.

Little is known about the socio-emotional consequences of dropping out of college. Here, we investigate the effects of college non-completion on a range of markers for general psychological well-being (self-esteem, life satisfaction, and fear of failure) as well as health-related well-being (self-rated general health and clinical depressive symptoms). Based on rich panel data from Germany in combination with entropy balancing, we find that by around age 31, non-completers fared worse compared to college graduates as well as non-college goers, i.

Biosurfer for systematic tracking of regulatory mechanisms leading to protein isoform diversity.

Long-read RNA-seq has shed light on transcriptomic complexity, but questions remain about the functionality of downstream protein products. We introduce Biosurfer, a computational approach for comparing protein isoforms, while systematically tracking the transcriptional, splicing, and translational variations that underlie differences in the sequences of the protein products. Using Biosurfer, we analyzed the differences in 35,082 pairs of GENCODE annotated protein isoforms, finding a majority (70%) of variable N-termini are due to the alternative transcription start sites, while only 9% arise from 5' UTR alternative splicing (AS).

The amygdala is a cluster of subcortical nuclei that receives diverse sensory inputs and projects to the cortex, midbrain, and other subcortical structures. Numerous accounts of amygdalar contributions to social and emotional behavior have been offered, yet an overarching description of amygdala function remains elusive. Here we adopt a computationally explicit framework that aims to develop a model of amygdala function based on the types of sensory inputs it receives, rather than individual constructs such as threat, arousal, or valence.
