Atmış B, Kışla-Ekinci RM, Melek E, Bişgin A, Yılmaz M, Anarat A, Karabay-Bayazıt A. Concomitance of Familial Mediterranean Fever and Gitelman syndrome in an adolescent. Turk J Pediatr 2019; 61: 444-448. Gitelman syndrome is a renal tubular salt-wasting disorder characterized by hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis with hypomagnesemia and hypocalciuria. Patients occasionally have symptoms in childhood, while diagnosis is often in adulthood. It is inherited by an autosomal recessive manner through SLC12A3 gene mutations. Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is the most common autoinflammatory disorder, inherited by an autosomal recessive manner and characterized by recurrent fever and pleuritis, peritonitis, and synovitis. Mutations in MEditerrenean FeVer (MEFV) gene, coding pyrin protein are responsible for FMF. Both MEFV and SCL12A3 genes were located on chromosome 16. A 9-year-old boy was admitted to our department because of recurrent abdominal pain, fever, joint pain and swelling since he was three years old. He was diagnosed as FMF and MEFV gene sequencing revealed homozygous M694V (c.2080A > G) mutation. At the age of 14 years, polyuria, polydipsia, hypokalemia and mild hypomagnesemia had occurred. Patient was successfully treated with oral supplementation of potassium and magnesium along with colchicine. Molecular genetic analysis including SCL12A3 gene sequencing revealed homozygote IVS4-16G > A (c.602-16G > A) intronic splicing site mutation.

Transcriptomic resources for Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister), a widespread invasive pest of Brassicales.

PLoS One

December 2024

Invasive Insect Biocontrol and Behavior Laboratory, USDA-ARS, Beltsville, Maryland, United States of America.

The bagrada bug, Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister), is an emerging agricultural pest in the Americas, threatening agricultural production in the southwestern United States, Mexico and Chile, as well as in the Old World (including Africa, South Asia and, more recently, Mediterranean areas of Europe). Substantive transcriptomic sequence resources for this damaging species would be beneficial towards understanding its capacity for developing insecticide resistance, identifying viruses that may be present throughout its population and identifying genes differentially expressed across life stages that could be exploited for biomolecular pesticide formulations. This study establishes B.

Background: Global research has reported that the number of children and adolescents suffering from mental health issues has increased over the past decades. In Jordan, there has been a growing interest in investigating mental health among these groups in the most recent decade; nevertheless, only a few studies have covered behavioral and emotional problems. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of behavioral and emotional problems among children and adolescents in Jordan and investigate their associated factors.

Severe obesity is closely associated with an increased risk of comorbidities and alterations in cardiac structure and function. The primary objective of this study was to investigate cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and ventricular remodeling in individuals from an obese population eligible for bariatric surgery. The secondary objective was to evaluate changes in anthropometric, clinical laboratory, and echocardiographic measurements 12 weeks after surgery compared to baseline values.

Background And Aims: Fire-released seed dormancy (SD) is a key trait for successful germination and plant persistence in many fire-prone ecosystems. Many local studies have shown that fire-released SD depends on heat and exposure time, dose of smoke-derived compounds, SD class, plant lineage and the fire regime. However, a global quantitative analysis of fire-released SD is lacking.

New diseases linked to MEFV variants or pyrinopathies.

J Allergy Clin Immunol Pract

December 2024

Sorbonne University, Department of Internal Medicine, DMU3ID, Hôpital Tenon, Assistance publique-hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), 4 rue de la Chine, 75020 Paris, France; Reference Center for Autoinflammatory Diseases and Inflammatory Amyloidosis (CEREMAIA). Electronic address:

Autoinflammatory diseases (AIDs) are characterized by dysregulation of innate immunity, leading to systemic inflammation. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the most common AID, associated with variants in exon 10 of MEFV. This gene codes for pyrin, a key protein in the inflammasome of the same name, involved in the innate immune response.
