Background: Pain is a major consequence of caries, which negatively impacts the quality of life of children and their families.

Aim: To analyse the parental report of dental pain and discomfort in preschool children, and to identify clinical and sociodemographic factors associated.

Design: This cross-sectional study involved 375 four- and five-year-old preschoolers enrolled in the city of Campo Magro public school system, along with their parents and caregivers. Parents/caregivers answered the Brazilian version of the Dental Discomfort Questionnaire (DDQ-B) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Two examiners (kappa > 0.79) performed clinical examinations using dmf-t and pufa index. The associations were statistically analysed by univariate and multiple Poisson regression with robust variance (α = 0.05).

Results: The prevalence of dental pain and discomfort was 70.3% (66%-75% 95% CI). Children from non-nuclear families (PR 1.33; 95% CI: 1.01-1.76) and whose parents presented a lower level of education (PR 2.43; 95% CI 1.66-3.55) presented a higher prevalence of dental pain or discomfort. Considering the clinical determinants, after adjusting, only the presence of clinical consequences of untreated dental caries (pufa ≥ 1) (PR 1.37; 95% CI 1.02-1.84) was significantly associated with higher dental pain or discomfort.

Conclusions: Dental pain and discomfort were associated with socioeconomic factors and with the presence of clinical consequences of untreated dental caries.

Mental and oral health are interrelated, and problems in one area usually affect the other. This review discusses the complex relationships between oral and mental health, particularly the psychosocial challenges faced by individuals with mental health disorders in maintaining oral hygiene, including stigma, lack of access to care, and financial barriers. It also discusses how psychiatric conditions influence oral health, with regard to issues such as dry mouth, gum disease, and tooth decay, and how poor oral health can aggravate mental well-being.

The sleep-wake states and general anesthesia share many neurophysiological similarities, as both involve reversible changes in consciousness and modulation of brain activity. This paper reviews the role of glutamatergic neurons, the brain's primary excitatory neurons, in regulating sleep-wake states and general anesthesia. We discuss the involvement of glutamatergic neurons across various brain regions, including the brainstem, basal forebrain, thalamus, hypothalamus, and cortex, highlighting their contributions to physiological sleep-wake and anesthesia modulation.

RAK College of Dental Sciences, Department of Prosthodontics, RAK Medical and Health Sciences University, Ras Al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term treatment outcomes of basal implants in patients with severely resorbed ridges, including the survival and success rates, patient complaints, satisfaction, and Quality of Life.

Evidence Acquisition: An extensive electronic search was conducted on the search engines: PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT) and the key words (basal implants, Corticobasal implants, Strategic Implants, severely resorbed ridge, severely atrophic ridge, treatment outcome, patient satisfaction) within the last 10 years.

Evidence Synthesis: A total of 21 articles were found, encompassing 9732 basal implants placed in 1219 patients.

Purpose: The landiolol and organ failure in patients with septic shock (STRESS-L study) included a pre-planned sub-study to assess the effect of landiolol treatment on inflammatory and metabolomic markers.

Methods: Samples collected from 91 patients randomised to STRESS-L were profiled for immune and metabolomic markers. A panel of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines were measured through commercially acquired multiplex Luminex assays and statistically analysed by individual and cluster-level analysis (patient).
