Published: February 2020

This end of the year summary reviews anesthesia related manuscripts that have been published in the Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing in 2019. Anesthesia is currently defined as being composed of unconsciousness, immobility, and autonomic nervous system (ANS) control (Br J Anaesth;122:e127-e135135, Egan 2019). Pain is a postoperative issue, because by definition unconsciousness implies pain cannot be experienced. We first review work related to these aspect of the profession: unconsciousness (EEG, target control), immobility (muscle relaxants), and ANS control. Regaining consciousness has to be accompanied by pain control, and it is important to ensure that the patient regains baseline cognitive function. Anesthesia machine equipment, drug administration, and airway related topics make up the rest of published manuscripts.

The role of mitochondrial remodeling in neurodegenerative diseases.

Neurochem Int

January 2025

Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, School of Public Health, Guangdong Medical University, Dongguan, 523808, PR China; Dongguan Key Laboratory of Environmental Medicine, School of Public Health, Guangdong Medical University, Dongguan, 523808, PR China. Electronic address:

Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of diseases that pose a serious threat to human health, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In recent years, it has been found that mitochondrial remodeling plays an important role in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Mitochondrial remodeling refers to the dynamic regulatory process of mitochondrial morphology, number and function, which can affect neuronal cell function and survival by regulating mechanisms such as mitochondrial fusion, division, clearance and biosynthesis.

Background: Organ procurement from brain-dead pregnant women is rare and typically occurs postfetal delivery. In this case report, we describe organ procurement from a brain-dead woman in her third trimester of pregnancy with a nonviable fetus remaining in utero.

Case Summary: We report a 33-year-old woman at 38 weeks gestation who suffered anoxic brain injury following cardiac arrest due to suspected opioid overdose.

Purpose: We assessed the associations of macular layer thicknesses, measured using spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT), with incident age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and AMD polygenic risk scores (PRS).

Design: Population-based cohort study PARTICIPANTS: 653 participants of the Alienor study, with biennial eye imaging from 2009 to 2024.

Methods: Macular layer thicknesses of eight distinct layers and three compound layers were automatically segmented based on SD-OCT imaging of the macula.

Study Question: Does a human fallopian tube (HFT) organoid model offer a favourable apical environment for human sperm survival and motility?

Summary Answer: After differentiation, the apical compartment of a new HFT organoid model provides a favourable environment for sperm motility, which is better than commercial media.

What Is Known Already: HFTs are the site of major events that are crucial for achieving an ongoing pregnancy, such as gamete survival and competence, fertilization steps, and preimplantation embryo development. In order to better understand the tubal physiology and tubal factors involved in these reproductive functions, and to improve still suboptimal in vitro conditions for gamete preparation and embryo culture during IVF, we sought to develop an HFT organoid model from isolated adult stem cells to allow spermatozoa co-culture in the apical compartment.

Immune Cells and Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Causal Investigation Through Mendelian Randomization.

Brain Behav

January 2025

Department of Neurology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Jinan University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Background: The involvement of immune cells in the pathophysiology of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is becoming increasingly recognized, yet their specific causal contributions remain uncertain. The objective of this research is to uncover the potential causal interactions between diverse immune cells and ICH using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.

Methods: Genetic variants associated with 731 immune cell traits were sourced from a comprehensive genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving 3757 participants.
