The photochemical reaction pathways of CHBr in solution were unveiled using two complementary X-ray techniques, time-resolved X-ray solution scattering (TRXSS) and X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, in a wide temporal range from 100 ps to tens of microseconds. By performing comparative measurements in protic (methanol) and aprotic (methylcyclohexane) solvents, we found that the reaction pathways depend significantly on the solvent properties. In methanol, the major photoproducts are CHOCHBr and HBr generated by rapid solvolysis of CHBr-Br, an isomer of CHBr. In contrast, in methylcyclohexane, -CHBr-Br returns to CHBr without solvolysis. In both solvents, the formation of CHBr and Br is a competing reaction channel. From the structural analysis of TRXSS data, we determined the structures of key intermediate species, CHOCHBr and -CHBr-Br in methanol and methylcyclohexane, respectively, which are consistent with the structures from density functional theory calculations.

Nickel-iron-based catalysts are recognized for their high efficiency in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions, yet the underlying mechanisms that drive their superior performance remain unclear. Herein, we revealed the molecular OER mechanism and the structure-intermediate-performance relationship of OER on a phosphorus-doped nickel-iron nanocatalyst (NiFeP). NiFeP exhibited exceptional activity and stability with an overpotential of only 210 mV at 10 mA cm in 1 M KOH and a cell voltage of 1.

An electrochemical reductive bimolecular cycloaddition of 2-arylideneindane-1,3-diones has been reported for the synthesis of spirocyclopentanole indane-1,3-diones bearing five contiguous stereocenters with vicinal tetrasubstituted stereocenters, especially involving a quaternary carbon center, in moderate to good yields and excellent diastereoselectivities. The present protocol features mild reaction conditions, no external chemical redox reagents, excellent atom economy, and gram-scale synthesis. In addition, a mechanistic investigation indicates that the reactions proceed through a radical pathway.

5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is an essential compound in the biosynthesis of heme, playing a critical role in various physiological processes within the human body. This review provides the thorough analysis of the latest research on the molecular mechanisms and potential therapeutic benefits of 5-ALA in managing metabolic disorders. The ability of 5-ALA to influence immune response and inflammation, oxidative/nitrosative stress, antioxidant system, mitochondrial functions, as well as carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, is mediated by molecular mechanisms associated with the suppression of the transcription factor NF-κB signaling pathway, activation of the transcription factor Nrf2/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) system leading to the formation of heme-derived reaction products (carbon monoxide, ferrous iron, biliverdin, and bilirubin), which may contribute to HO-1-dependent cytoprotection through antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects.
