The beaming effect in single apertures surrounded by periodic corrugations and the manipulation of beaming directions from such structures has gained considerable attention since discovery. Different materials and structural profiles have been studied in this context but directional beaming at angles larger than 45° has not been achieved. We design and demonstrate nanoslits in a gold film flanked by corrugations, which give rise to beaming angles ranging from 45° to 60°. While the previous designs are based on achieving constructive interference at the aimed beaming angle, our approach complements such constructive interference with destructive interference at 0° and, as a result, enhances the directional beaming effect at angles larger than 45°. The structures are fabricated by electron beam lithography with two consecutive lift-off processes. The experimental far-field intensity distributions agree well with the designs.

We study numerically and experimentally the second-harmonic generation (SHG) from rectangular metagratings of V-shaped gold nanoantennas. We show that by carefully engineering the array pitch to steer the diffraction orders toward the single antenna emission, the extracted signal is maximized. This enhancement is attributed to the angular overlap between the radiation pattern and array factor and is comparable to the improvement yielded by the coupling of surface lattice resonances (SLRs) with local modes.

To visualize the X-ray fields, overlaps, and over-beaming on the skin surface during spiral head CT scanning. The measured pitch factors were determined by measuring 3 rotation times, 11 table-feed speeds, and an X-ray beam width. The X-ray fields, overlaps, and over-beaming on the skin surface were calculated via computer-aided design-based X-ray beam modeling, and the values obtained using the nominal pitch and measured pitch factors were compared.

An efficient photovoltaic power converter is a critical element in laser power beaming systems for maximizing the end-to-end power transfer efficiency while minimizing beam reflections from the receiver for safety considerations. We designed a multilayer absorber that can efficiently trap monochromatic light from broad incident angles. The proposed design is built on the concept of a one-way coherent absorber with inverse-designed aperiodic multilayer front- and back-reflectors that enable maximal optical absorption in a thin-film photovoltaic material for broad angles.

Nanophotonic light emitters are key components in numerous application areas because of their compactness and versatility. Here, we propose a topological beam emitter structure that takes advantage of submicrometer footprint size, small divergence angle, high efficiency, and adaptable beam shaping capability. The proposed structure consists of a topological junction of two guided-mode resonance gratings inducing a leaky Jackiw-Rebbi state resonance.
