Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) is a highly toxic food contaminant that is extensively used in food applications as surface antifouling agent. In this present study, we aimed to assess whether green tea polyphenols (GTPs) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) exert protective effects against PFDA-induced liver damage and inflammation in mice. A mouse model to evaluate liver toxicity was established by giving mice drinking water containing different concentrations of PFDA. GTPs or EGCG (0.32%, w/v) were co-administered to mice exposed to PFDA in drinking water. Overall, GTPs and EGCG extended the survival time and inhibited weight loss among mice who received a lower dose of PFDA. Moreover, GTPs and EGCG ameliorated hepatic oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, necrosis, steatosis, edema, and degeneration, reduced hepatic inflammation and NLRP3 inflammasome activation caused by a moderate dose of PFDA. Taken together, these results show that GTPs or EGCG (or green tea intake) supplements can be beneficial for people exposed to PFDA.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate (ECG) are the most abundant ester catechins of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) with numerous potential bioactivities, which have wide application prospects in the fields of medicine and functional foods. In this study, a new method using macroporous resin and crystallization was established to separate and purify EGCG and ECG. Two resins with high adsorption and desorption capacities for EGCG and ECG were screened through static adsorption/desorption tests, and the LX-20B resin was selected through column chromatography due to its best separation effect.

We evaluated if chronic consumption of quercetin (Q) with green tea extract (GTE) enhances the bioavailability of GT polyphenols (GTPs) and reduces methylation activity as previously observed in mouse xenograft tumors. In this prospective, randomized, parallel design, placebo controlled study, thirty-one men with prostate cancer consumed daily 1 gram of GTE (830 mg of GTP) with 800 mg of Q (GT + Q) or placebo (GT + PL) for four weeks before prostatectomy. First morning voided urine was collected at baseline, 3 weeks and the day of surgery, and prostate tissue on the day of surgery.

Green tea polyphenols (GTPs) and their major constituent, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), have been reported to demonstrate many interesting biological activities, including anticancer properties. Recent studies on prostate cancer provide strong evidence that epigenetic mechanisms are major players in the regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their binding partner tissue inhibitor of MMPs (TIMPs) involved in prostate cancer progression. Here we demonstrate that GTP/EGCG mediate epigenetic reactivation of TIMP-3 that plays a key role in suppressing invasiveness and cancer progression.
