Autophagy () is an intracellular degradation process used by cells to keep a "clean house"; as it degrades abnormal or damaged proteins and organelles, it helps to fight infections and also provides energy in times of fasting or exercising. Autophagy also plays a role in cancer, although its precise function in each cancer type is still obscure, and whether autophagy plays a protecting (through the clearing of damaged organelles and protein aggregates and preventing DNA damage) or a promoting (by fueling the already stablished tumor) role in cancer remains to be fully characterized. Beclin 1, the mammalian ortholog of yeast Atg6/Vps30, is an essential autophagy protein and has been shown to play a role in tumor suppression. Here, an update of the tumorigenesis regulation by Beclin 1-dependent autophagy is provided.

Genetic association between SUMO-specific protease 1 (SENP1) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has been validated. However, the mechanism by which SENP1 affects AML proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy remains unknown. The levels of SENP1 and polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1) were measured in patients with AML, AML cell lines, and xenograft tissues.

Alterations in autophagy are involved in pulmonary hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R)-induced injury. Here, we intended to explain the function of microRNA-141-3p (miR-141-3p) in regulating autophagy under the H/R condition. Rat pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) were applied for H/R cell model establishment, followed by tracing of autophagy formation.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is featured by notorious EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) resistance attributable to activation of parallel pathways. The numerous phase I/II trials have rarely shown encouraging clinical outcomes of EGFR-TKIs during treatment in HNSCC patients with advanced tumors. A unique IL-6/STAT3 signaling axis is reported to regulate multiple cancer-related pathways, but whether this signaling is correlated with reduced EGFR-TKI responsiveness is unclear.

Background: Vascular dementia (VD) is the second most common type of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. β-asarone, a major component of Acorus tatarinowii Schott, is important in neurodegenerative and neurovascular diseases. Studies have confirmed that β-asarone can mitigate autophagy and reduce damage in hypoxic cells.

5-Fluorouracil is an effective chemotherapeutic drug for gastric cancer. However, the acquisition of chemotherapeutic resistance remains a challenge in treatment. Melatonin can enhance the therapeutic effect of 5-fluorouracil; however, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood.
