We fabricate and characterize a germanium/thulium (Ge/Tm) co-doped silica fiber in order to enhance the gain at the short wavelength edge of the thulium emission band (i.e. 1620-1660 nm). The Ge/Tm doped fiber shows an intrinsic blue-shifted absorption/emission cross-section compared to aluminum/thulium (Al/Tm) co-doped fiber, which greatly improves the short wavelength amplification and has enabled us to further extend the shortest wavelength of emission towards 1600 nm. Using this glass fiber composition, we have demonstrated both a silica-based thulium doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) in the 1628-1655 nm waveband and a tunable thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) capable of accessing the telecom U-band wavelength region. These results represent by far the shortest amplifier/laser wavelengths reported to-date from TDFAs/TDFLs.

Difference frequency generation (DFG) based tunable single-frequency mid-infrared (MIR) light sources are desirable for high-resolution spectroscopy, sensing, and imaging. In this work, we demonstrate a continuous-wave (CW) single-frequency DFG in a ZnGeP (ZGP) crystal driven by all-fiber near-infrared (NIR) fiber lasers, for the first time to our knowledge. The all-fiber NIR laser sources consist of a 1.

We present a model and design for a high-power triple-clad thulium doped fiber specifically for in-band or tandem pumping. This fiber is designed to maximize the output signal power while taking into consideration common effects that limit high-power operation. In-band pumping will allow for thulium fiber lasers to reach multi-kW power levels.

We report the first, to our knowledge, observation of the nonlinear phenomenon known as modulation instability (MI) in a coherently driven fiber resonator pumped at 1972 nm. To compensate for the very high losses in this spectral region, we have integrated a thulium-doped fiber amplifier inside the cavity. Lower losses allow a lower MI threshold, leading to the observation of this phenomenon at a moderate input power.

We report on single-frequency, linearly polarized, high-concentration thulium-doped silica fiber-distributed Bragg reflector lasers operating at wavelengths between 1908 and 2050 nm with high efficiencies up to 48% and high powers up to 1 W. Low relative power noise and frequency noise are demonstrated using a low-noise pump diode.

We report on a highly efficient, in-band pumped, Q-switched, Tm-doped, rod-type master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system delivering up to 140 W average output power and 7 mJ pulse energy with a slope efficiency of 77% at 20 kHz repetition rate. The amplifier is pumped with Raman-shifted fiber lasers centered at 1692 nm. This in-band pump scheme for Tm-doped fiber lasers can significantly mitigate their quantum defect-related heat load limitations.
