In this study, the effect of grain size and precipitates on tensile properties of Zn-1.0Cu alloy were investigated. The alloy was cold rolled and annealed to manipulate the grain size and precipitation of CuZn particles at grain boundaries. Cold rolling resulted in an almost ultrafinegrained structure alongside precipitation of nano-sized CuZn particles. Strain induced precipitates triggered room temperature superplasticity through activation of Zn/CuZn boundary sliding, exhibiting maximum elongation of 470% at the strain rate of 1.0 × 10 s. Short-time annealing led to significantly reduced strain rate sensitivity due to the reduction of CuZn fraction, while the grain size remained nearly intact. This suggests that precipitates rather than grain size mainly influence the mechanical properties of Zn alloys.

Ocean current modulation of the spatial distribution of microplastics in the surface sediments of the Beibu Gulf, China.

J Hazard Mater

January 2025

School of Chemistry and Environment, Guangdong Provincial Observation and Research Station for Tropical Ocean Environment in Western Coastal Water, Guangdong Ocean University, Zhanjiang 524088, China.

Microplastic pollution, a major global environmental issue, is gaining heightened attention worldwide. Marginal seas are particularly susceptible to microplastic contamination, yet data on microplastics in marine sediments remain scarce, especially in the Beibu Gulf. This study presents a large-scale investigation of microplastics in the surface sediments of the Beibu Gulf to deciphering their distribution, sources and risk to marginal seas ecosystems.

This paper investigates the effects of particle morphology (PM) and particle size distribution (PSD) on the micro-macro mechanical behaviours of granular soils through a novel X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT)-based discrete element method (DEM) technique. This technique contains the grain-scale property extraction by the X-ray μCT, DEM parameter calibration by the one-to-one mapping technique, and the massive derivative DEM simulations. In total, 25 DEM samples were generated with a consideration of six PSDs and four PMs.

The Effect of Alumina-Rich Spinel Exsolution on the Mechanical Property of Calcium Aluminate Cement-Bonded Corundum Castables.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Henan Key Laboratory of High Temperature Functional Ceramics, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou 450001, China.

This study investigates the effect of the exsolution behavior of alumina-rich spinel on the formation and distribution of CA (CaAlO) in corundum castables bonded with calcium aluminate cement. In this study, alumina-rich spinel is substituted for tabular corundum in the same proportions and grain size. The matrices after curing were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).

The Multiple Effects of RE Element Addition in Non-Oriented Silicon Steel.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Key Laboratory for Anisotropy and Texture of Materials (Ministry of Education), Northeastern University, Shenyang 110819, China.

High-grade non-oriented silicon steel with high magnetic induction and low iron loss produced with low carbon emissions is crucial for the development of new energy and energy-saving motors. In this paper, the trace mixed rare earth (RE) elements exhibit a great potential to enhance magnetic properties in a lower carbon emission process by multiple effects on microstructure, texture, and inclusion in non-oriented silicon steel. With the trace-doped RE elements (0.
