Background: Adult female acne (AFA) occurs beyond 25 years of age and can present either as isolated acne or with hyperandrogenic signs.

Methods: 120 females aged ≥ 25 years were evaluated for acne, hirsutism and androgenetic alopecia. Hormonal assessment included total testosterone (TT), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), free androgen index (FAI), Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH), 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and prolactin. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was diagnosed using Rotterdam's criteria.

Results: The mean GAGS score was 15.57 ± 4.04.71.66% females had acne with hyperandrogenic signs (hirsutism, 55.81%; hyperseborrhoea, 65.12%; irregular menses, 36.05%) and 18.33% had increased androgen levels. The group with hyperandrogenic signs had longer duration of disease, truncal acne, significant adolescent acne history, stress, inappropriate diet and PCOS compared to the isolated acne group. The mean androgen levels were higher in the former but the difference was statistically insignificant.

Conclusions: Adult female acne can be associated with hyperandrogenic features though routine hormonal tests may not reveal an underlying abnormality except PCOS. End-organ hypersensitivity is the most plausible explanation and thus justifies the use of antiandrogens in its management.

Overt and hidden polymorphism in the binary system involving the Z- and E- isomers of broparestrol.

Int J Pharm

Broparestrol has been used as a drug to treat acne in the form of a mixture of its two stereoisomers. Although it has been withdrawn from the market, the binary system is rich in polymorphism and understanding the phase behaviour of the binary system involving the E- and Z-isomers is challenging. Physical mixtures do not immediately give rise to equilibrium phase behaviour, whereas recrystallization often leads to metastable phases and the appearance of stable phases can take years.

Purpose: Observational studies have suggested a potential link between emotions and inflammatory dermatoses. However, research on the causal relationship between different types of emotions and inflammatory dermatoses is lacking. This study is aimed to investigate the causal relationship between negative emotions and inflammatory dermatoses through Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.

Objectives: Despite being a commensal of human skin, Cutibacterium acnes plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Acne vulgaris, with the loss of bacterial phylotype diversity being related to disease progression. This study evaluated differences in the virulence profile of C. acnes strains from different phylotypes and investigated the possible phylotype-selective efficacy of essential oils (EOs) from Thymus x citriodorus (TC), Thymus mastichina, and Cistus ladanifer compared to Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree), focusing on both planktonic and biofilm growth forms, the latter being related with pathogenesis and treatment resistance.

Background: Acne vulgaris (AV) is a multifactorial inflammatory skin disorder, affecting 9.45% of the world's population. AV can be painful, discomforting, and disfiguring due to scarring, leading to physiological distress, and economic burden.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of *Cutibacterium acnes* strains in either colonizing healthy skin or causing infections, noting that the molecular basis for their differing behaviors remains unclear.
  • Researchers collected strains from 27 infected individuals and 18 healthy controls, using strict criteria to determine their roles, and compared genomic data for analysis.
  • Findings indicated that while colonizing strains clustered separately from most clinical strains, genomic differences related to metabolic pathways and DNA repair, rather than distinct virulence factors, might explain the varying behaviors of these strains.
