The genus was described by Wirth and Grogan based on the diagnostic characters of the species group. The first descriptions of species were based on body coloration, which resulted in confusion and misunderstanding of their identification. The aim of this study was to provide an updated diagnosis and description of , describe 18 new species, and redescribe 10 previously poorly described species. New records of species, a key for identification of all New World species, and a table with important morphometric data to distinguish both males and females of the various species are provided along with distribution maps of the 46 known New World species.

A phylogenetic analysis of all extant genera of Ceratopogonidae worldwide indicates there are now 109 valid genera, including two that are unnamed. All potential morphological features were considered, with 364 adult characters surveyed. Of these 146 adult characters were considered informative and these were combined with 40 pupal features previously interpreted by Borkent (2014), 16 larval and two egg characters.

A new species of Pseudostilobezzia Wirth & Ratanaworabhan is described, the third in this small genus, from Vietnam and based on two females. A key is provided to distinguish the three species, all restricted to the Oriental Region, in Vietnam or the nearby Hainan province, China. The phylogenetic relationship between this genus and other Ceratopogonidae suggests that it may be a somewhat distinctive lineage within Stilobezzia Kieffer.

For each listed species, the following information is included: sex and/or life stage described in the original description, type locality, type status and sex, depository of type material, distribution, georeferenced localities for Argentina (provinces are underlined) and main references that include the original description and those that specify locations in the country.
