Probiotics have shown promising results as a potential method to control toxocariasis in mice inoculated with embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of Saccharomyces boulardii in mice fed in natura chicken livers infected with T. canis. Twenty 15-day-old male Sussex chickens were inoculated with 300 T. canis embryonated eggs via intragastric catheter (GI). After 72 h of infection, each liver was collected and individually offered to a group of 20 mice. Mice that received supplemented ration with S. boulardii (1.10 colony forming units) and consumed in natura chicken liver showed reduction in infection intensity of 67.1%. This study demonstrated that administration of S. boulardii has potential as a probiotic to assist in controlling visceral toxocariasis caused by the consumption of viscera from paratenic hosts containing infective parasite larvae.

The gut microbiome, a collection of gut microorganisms, is crucial in the development and progression of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Therefore, diet and dietary interventions are promising strategies to shape the gut microbiota for IBD management. Of all the diets studied in the IBD field, the Mediterranean diet has the least restrictive nature, promoting long-term adherence.

Background: Perturbations of intestinal serotonergic neurotransmission seem to be involved in bowel dysmotility associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with diarrhea. Oral administration of probiotics is an emerging strategy to improve IBS symptoms, possibly via influencing local serotonin metabolism and neurotransmission. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 (S.

Oral administration of therapeutic peptides is limited by poor intestinal absorption. Use of engineered microorganisms as drug delivery vehicles can overcome the challenges faced by conventional delivery methods. The potential of engineered microorganisms to act synergistically with the therapeutics they deliver opens new horizons for noninvasive treatment modalities.

Fungal mycobiome dysbiosis in choledocholithiasis concurrent with cholangitis.

J Gastroenterol

November 2024

Department of Gastroenterology, Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine, 150 Jimo Road, Shanghai, 200120, China.

Background: The gut mycobiome might have an important influence on the pathogenesis of choledocholithiasis concurrent with cholangitis (CC). The aim of this study was to characterize the fungal mycobiome profiles, explore the correlation and equilibrium of gut interkingdom network among bacteria-fungi-metabolites triangle in CCs.

Methods: In a retrospective case-control study, we recruited patients with CC (n = 25) and healthy controls (HCs) (n = 25) respectively to analyze the gut fungal dysbiosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The popularity of probiotics in human diets is on the rise, with bacteria being more commonly used, but yeast probiotics also offer multiple health benefits, including diarrhea prevention and immune system modulation.
  • - While specific yeast strains have been extensively studied, there is growing interest in other yeast candidates and their roles in maintaining gut health and preventing infections.
  • - This review emphasizes the production and delivery of yeast-based probiotics, suggesting they can enhance overall health beyond gut wellness, impacting skin, respiratory systems, and immune support.
