Getting it right: suppression and leveraging of noise in robust decision-making.

Quant Plant Biol

November 2024

Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology, The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umeå Plant Science Center, Umeå, Sweden.

Noise is a ubiquitous feature for all organisms growing in nature. Noise (defined here as stochastic variation) in the availability of nutrients, water and light profoundly impacts their growth and development. Not only is noise present as an external factor but cellular processes themselves are noisy.

CD28 shapes T cell receptor signaling by regulating Lck dynamics and ZAP70 activation.

Front Immunol

December 2024

Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, United States.

Introduction: T cell activation requires T cell receptor (TCR) engagement by its specific ligand. This interaction initiates a series of proximal events including tyrosine phosphorylation of the CD3 and TCRζ chains, recruitment, and activation of the protein tyrosine kinases Lck and ZAP70, followed by recruitment of adapter and signaling proteins. CD28 co-stimulation is also required to generate a functional immune response.

A Bayesian dynamic stopping method for evoked response brain-computer interfacing.

Front Hum Neurosci

December 2024

Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Introduction: As brain-computer interfacing (BCI) systems transition fromassistive technology to more diverse applications, their speed, reliability, and user experience become increasingly important. Dynamic stopping methods enhance BCI system speed by deciding at any moment whether to output a result or wait for more information. Such approach leverages trial variance, allowing good trials to be detected earlier, thereby speeding up the process without significantly compromising accuracy.

Lessons learned in delayed identification of a misplaced electrode array in the vestibule.

J Otol

October 2024

Department of Ear, Nose and Throat - Head and Neck Surgery, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, 1 Jurong East Street 21, Singapore, 609606, Singapore.

To report a case of cochlear implantation with a misplaced electrode array in the vestibule and the causes for the delay in identification. A 23-year-old male with left single-sided deafness underwent cochlear implantation. The intraoperative assessment did not reveal any major red flags of electrode array misplacement.
