Metal-free graphite-like carbon nitride (GCN-500) was obtained by thermal post-treatment of bulk polymeric carbon nitride at 500 °C. The catalyst was thoroughly characterized by morphological, optical and textural analysis techniques. The efficiency of GCN-500 was evaluated under visible (λ = 417 nm) LED excitation for the photocatalytic degradation of methyl-, ethyl- and propyl-paraben in different water matrices either isolated or in a mixture of the three compounds. The GCN-500 proved to be more efficient than the benchmark TiO P25, with complete conversion of the individual parabens within 20 min of irradiation, contrasting with 120 min needed for total degradation using TiO. Experiments in the presence of selected scavengers confirmed the high importance of superoxide radicals in the photocatalytic oxidation of parabens using GCN-500. The effect of the nature of the aqueous matrix in the kinetics of the photocatalytic process was assessed using ultrapure, tap and river waters spiked with a mixture of the three parabens. Although still very efficient, the complexity of the real water samples turned the degradation process slower due to the presence of other components such as ions and dissolved organic matter. GCN-500 proved to be stable in a continuous-flow system using GCN-500 coated glass rings (GCN-500-GR) to remove MP, EP and PP from real water matrices.

Papermaking wastewater consists of a sizable amount of industrial wastewater; hence, real-time access to precise and trustworthy effluent indices is crucial. Because wastewater treatment processes are complicated, nonlinear, and time-varying, it is essential to adequately monitor critical quality indices, especially chemical oxygen demand (COD). Traditional models for predicting COD often struggle with sensitivity to parameter tuning and lack interpretability, underscoring the need for improvement in industrial wastewater treatment.

Despite recent substantial advances in water treatment, the ability to selectively degrade trace micropollutants in real waters with complex matrix components remains a grand challenge. Here we report rational crafting of graphene oxide (GO)-wrapped defective TiO2 composite catalysts that creates nanoscopic confinement over the TiO2 surface within GO, thereby enabling the selective degradation of micropollutants through effectively excluding natural organic matter (NOM) and anions from the nanoconfined catalytic sites. In contrast to unconfined counterparts, the nanoconfined composite catalysts retain high degradation efficiency when exposed to various concentrations of NOM and anions, even in real water samples.

Bacterial luciferase (LuxAB) catalyzes the conversion of reduced flavin mononucleotide (FMNH⁻), oxygen, and a long-chain aldehyde to oxidized FMN, the corresponding acid and water with concomitant light emission. This bioluminescence reaction requires the reaction of a flavin reductase such as LuxG (in vivo partner of LuxAB) to supply FMNH⁻ for the LuxAB reaction. LuxAB is a well-known self-sufficient luciferase system because both aldehyde and FMNH⁻ substrates can be produced by the associated enzymes encoded by the genes in the lux operon, allowing the system to be auto-luminous.

Water reuse is a viable option to address temporal or structural water shortages. However, the ubiquitous presence of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) in natural systems, especially the aquatic environment, represents a significant obstacle to water reuse and the receiving environment. Therefore, an extensive literature review was performed to identify current water reuse practices at field scale, reported types and levels of CECs and their associated risks for human and environmental health.

The microalgal-bacterial consortium (MBC) system is recognized as an advanced approach for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment. However, the influence of microalgae on bacterial community dynamics and niche differentiation across varying seasonal conditions remains unexplored. In this study, we established a pilot-scale continuous-flow MBC system to disentangle, for the first time, the impact of microalgae on seasonal bacterial community succession by conducting monthly time-series sampling over a full seasonal cycle.
