Trehalose (Tre) is composed of two molecules of D-glucose joined by an α,α-1,1 glucosidic linkage. Because Tre is utilized by the gut microbiome and enhances gut immunity in chickens, it is used as a feed ingredient. However, taste preference and metabolic dynamics of Tre in chickens are not fully understood.

The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are incurable pediatric neurodegenerative diseases characterized by accumulation of lysosomal material and dysregulation of autophagy. Given the promising results of treatment with trehalose, an autophagy inducer, in cell and animal models of NCL, we conducted an open-label, non-placebo-controlled, non-randomized 12-month prospective study in NCL patients receiving oral trehalose (4 g/day). All were treated with a commercially available formulation for 6 months, followed by a 6-month washout.

Granulomas, dense clusters of immune cells and bacteria, are critical barriers in tuberculosis (TB) treatment. Recent advancements in TB management have highlighted granuloma control as a potential host-directed therapy (HDT) strategy. Although isoniazid (INH) is the first-line drug for TB therapy, its efficacy is limited to non-replicating Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) under granulomatous conditions, necessitating the development of more effective derivatives.

Interest in oral delivery of biological drug products, commonly prepared through lyophilization, is surging. Typically, low solid content solutions are employed for lyophilization to enhance mass transfer and minimize drying time. Yet, this approach often results in lyophilized powders with low bulk density and poor flowability, challenging downstream processing steps that are required for oral product development.
