Objectives: Limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (LcSSc) is the most common subset of SSc but it has been overlooked in the past years. At a time at which clinical trials focus on diffuse cutaneous SSc (DcSSc) we aimed at clarifying the outcomes of LcSSc and at evaluating whether potential drug positioned in DcSSc may also be used in LcSSc.
Methods: The EUSTAR database was used to investigate skin, lung and peripheral vasculopathy outcomes in LcSSc. Worsening of skin fibrosis, ILD and peripheral vasculopathy were defined by an increase in modified Rodnan skin score (mRSS) > 3.5 points, a decrease of FVC > 10% in patients with ILD at baseline, and by the development of new digital ulcers (DU) in patients without DU at baseline.
Results: 8013 LcSSc and 4786 DcSSc patients were included. In contrast to DcSSc, skin disease was remarkably stable in the majority of LcSSc patients with >80% having a change lower than ±4 units of mRSS at 12, 24 and 36 months follow-up. Conversely, FVC changes over time were very similar between LcSSc and DcSSc. Regarding DU, numbers of patients with new DU over time seemed to be almost similar between the two subsets.
Conclusions: LcSSc patients have a low mRSS at baseline with marginal changes with time. Conversely, SSc-ILD can be as progressive as in DcSSc supporting the inclusion of LcSSc patients in SSc-ILD trials and suggesting potential benefit of any anti-ILD drugs. Similarly, although slightly less common, DU should receive the same attention in the two subsets.

This study aimed to examine whether a reported SSc-associated SNP rs2841277 in the PLD4 gene identified in an Asian population was also associated with SSc in European American (EA). The EA cohort consisting of 1005 SSc patients and 961 healthy controls was examined in this study. TaqMan genotyping assays were performed to examine the SNP.

Objectives: Anticentromere antibodies (ACA) are typically found in limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc), whereas patients with anti-topoisomerase I antibodies (ATA) usually exhibit diffuse cutaneous involvement (dcSSc). We aimed to investigate the clinical phenotype and outcome of ACA-dcSSc.
Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted (January 1970 to April 2023) across MEDLINE, Scopus and OVID, to define whether SSc patients (population) within the ACA-dcSSc subset (exposure) had higher/lower risk for major organ involvement (interstitial lung disease-ILD, pulmonary hypertension-PH, primary myocardial involvement-PMI, scleroderma renal crisis-SRC) and mortality (outcomes) compared to ACA-lcSSc and ATA-dcSSc.

Background: Objectives were to assess the mouth opening ability (MOA) among patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in comparison to a healthy control population. The impact of microstomia (decrease in any of the MOA parameters) on physical performance and long-term survival was also investigated.
Methods: Interincisal (ID), interlabial (LD), the intercommissural distances at both opened mouth and closed mouth (OW, CW) and the oral area (OA) and circumference (OC) all were assessed in 131 SSc patients.

Objective: Organ damage in systemic sclerosis (SSc) in individual organs such as the lungs may be prevented by immunosuppressive drugs (IS). A new measure of global organ damage, the Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium Damage Index (SCTC-DI), has allowed us to investigate whether IS may reduce global organ damage accrual in early SSc.
Methods: This was a retrospective study of patients with < 2 years disease duration in Canadian and Australian SSc cohorts.
