Biosurfactants have a biological origin, and are widely known as surface active agents. Different classes of biosurfactant have significant importance in both the biotechnological and microbiological arena. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Candida sp. are important classes of microorganisms that are highly investigated for the production of rhamnolipids (RLs) biosurfactants. Rhamnolipids have unique surface activity and have gained interest in various industrial applications. Due to their high biodegradability, renewability and functionally maintenance at extreme conditions, microbial biosurfactants are more advantageous than chemical-based biosurfactants. Biosurfactants produced by microorganisms are a potential candidate for biodegradation, environmental cleanup of pollutants and also play a role in the heavy metal removal of metallurgical industries also many patents have been filed. Therefore, greater attention has been paid to biosurfactants and identifying their potential applications for further studies.

In China, the crude oil supply is highly dependent on overseas countries, and thus strengthening crude oil self-sufficiency has become an important issue of the national energy security. Tertiary oil recovery, especially polymer flooding, has been widely applied in large oil fields in China, which can increase the recovery rate by 15%-20% compared with water flooding. However, the widely used oil flooding polymers show poor thermal stability and salinity tolerance, complicated synthesis ways of monomers, and environmental unfriendliness.

The nutritional characteristics of the tetrasaccharide stachyose prompted its incorporation into biosurfactants through esterification with fatty acid derivatives embodying 12-22 carbon chains. The resulting esters were evaluated for their surface active effects, emulsifying properties and capacities to form emulsions capable of the selective delivery of the anti-oxidant resveratrol. While such studies have revealed that those congeners embodying longer side-chains have higher critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and lower interfacial tensions, their hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) values fell within a tight range.

With rising concerns about antimicrobial resistance, the identification of new lead compounds to target multidrug-resistant bacteria is essential. This study employed a fast miniaturized screening to simultaneously cultivate and evaluate about 300 marine strains for biosurfactant and antibacterial activities, leading to the selection of the deep-sea BCP32. The integration of tandem mass spectrometry molecular networking and bioassay-guided fractionation unveiled this strain as a prolific factory of surfactins and nobilamides.

Surfactin is a biosurfactant produced by many strains with a wide variety of functions from lowering surface tension to allowing motility of bacterial swarms, acting as a signaling molecule, and even exhibiting antimicrobial activities. However, the impact of surfactin during biofilm formation has been debated with variable findings between studies depending on the experimental conditions. B.

Bile salts are biosurfactants released into the intestinal lumen which play an important role in the solubilisation of fats and certain drugs. Their concentrations vary along the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). This is significant for implementation in physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modelling to mechanistically capture drug absorption.
