Motivated by applications in physical and biological sciences, we developed a Frequency Modulated Möbius (FMM) model to describe rhythmic patterns in oscillatory systems. Unlike standard symmetric sinusoidal models, FMM is a flexible parametric model that allows deformations to sinusoidal shape to accommodate commonly seen asymmetries in applications. FMM model parameters are easy to estimate and the model is easy to interpret complex rhythmic data. We illustrate FMM model in three disparate applications, namely, circadian clock gene expression, corticoptropin levels in depressed patients and the temporal light intensity patterns of distant stars. In each case, FMM model is demonstrated to be flexible, scientifically plausible and easy to interpret. Analysis of synthetic data derived from patterns of real data, suggest that FMM model fits the data very well both visually as well as in terms of the goodness of fit measure total mean squared error. An R language based software for implementing FMM model is available.

Background & Aims: Childhood adiposity and inflammation impact long-term health. However, associations between dietary inflammation and childhood adiposity are unclear. We investigated if more pro-inflammatory diets are associated with greater adiposity in early-, mid-, and late-childhood.

A fast BEM (boundary element method) based approach is developed to solve an EEG/MEG forward problem for a modern high-resolution head model. The method utilizes a charge-based BEM accelerated by the fast multipole method (BEM-FMM) with an adaptive mesh pre-refinement method (called b-refinement) close to the singular dipole source(s). No costly matrix-filling or direct solution steps typical for the standard BEM are required; the method generates on-skin voltages as well as MEG magnetic fields for high-resolution head models within 90 s after initial model assembly using a regular workstation.

Lung fibrosis development utilizes alveolar macrophages, with mechanisms that are incompletely understood. Here, we fate map connective tissue during mouse lung fibrosis and observe disassembly and transfer of connective tissue macromolecules from pleuro-alveolar junctions (PAJs) into deep lung tissue, to activate fibroblasts and fibrosis. Disassembly and transfer of PAJ macromolecules into deep lung tissue occurs by alveolar macrophages, activating cysteine-type proteolysis on pleural mesothelium.

Fullerenes (C, C) as carbon nanomaterials can enter the environment through natural processes and anthropogenic activities, while synthetic fullerenes are commonly used in medicine in targeted therapies in association with antibodies, or anticancer and antimicrobial drugs. As the nanoparticles, they can pass through cell membranes and organelles and accumulate in the entire cytoplasm. The red-fluorescent, water-soluble [70]fullerene derivative C-OMe-ser, which produces reactive oxygen species upon illumination with an appropriate wavelength, passed into the cytoplasm of the middle region in the digestive system.
