Research training is an important intervention for preparing undergraduate students to pursue further studies and develop research skills. Furthermore, there is mounting evidence indicating that mentored research impacts student success metrics. At the University of Texas at El Paso, a Freshman Year Research Intensive Sequence (FYRIS) was developed to prepare first-year students for research experiences.

Calls to increase undergraduate involvement in research have led to a significant increase in student participation via course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). These CUREs provide students an authentic research experience, which often involves dissemination of research by public speaking. For instance, the First-year Research Immersion (FRI) program at Binghamton University is a three-semester CURE sequence that prepares students for scientific research and effective communication of their findings.

This article examines student experiences in a workshop-based undergraduate research experience studying the activity and inhibition of salivary amylase that provides students with the chance to participate in authentic scientific research prior to the start of their undergraduate studies, following the structure of a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE). Understanding student experiences at this point in their studies is important because research experiences at the beginning of university studies have been shown to increase retention in STEM. This study utilizes meaningful learning and situated cognition as theoretical frameworks and phenomenography as a methodological framework, applied to data from semi-structured interviews with six students.

Background: There has been little attention to how the allocation of marks affects the academic performance of students in courses. Our previous study showed that students in nursing had much lower marks in exams than coursework (tutorials and case study) in a pharmacology course. It is not known whether this applies to nursing students in other courses and/or with different types of coursework.
