Complexes between the anionic polyelectrolyte sodium polyacrylate (PA) and an oppositely charged divalent azobenzene dye are prepared in aqueous solution. Depending on the ratio between dye and polyelectrolyte stable aggregates with a well-defined spherical shape are observed. Upon exposure of these complexes to UV light, the trans → cis transition of the azobenzene is excited resulting in a better solubility of the dye and a dissolution of the complexes. The PA chains reassemble into well-defined aggregates when the dye is allowed to relax back into the trans isomer. Varying the temperature during this reformation step has a direct influence on the final size of the aggregates rendering temperature in an efficient way to easily change the size of the self-assemblies. Application of time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to study the structure formation reveals that the cis → trans isomerization is the rate-limiting step followed by a nucleation and growth process.

The Role of Light Irradiation and Dendrimer Generation in Directing Electrostatic Self-Assembly.

pH-responsive polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers are used as well-defined building blocks to design light-switchable nano-assemblies in solution. The complex interplay between the photoresponsive di-anionic azo dye Acid Yellow 38 (AY38) and the cationic PAMAM dendrimers of different generations is presented in this study. Electrostatic self-assembly involving secondary dipole-dipole interactions provides well-defined assemblies within a broad size range (10 nm-1 μm) with various shapes.

This study investigates the effect of ultrasonic-assisted preparation on the structural and physicochemical properties of water caltrop starch-palmitic acid complexes as a function of ultrasound intensity and treatment time. All samples exhibited the characteristic birefringence of starch-lipid complexes under the polarized microscope, and flake-like and irregular structure under scanning electron microscope (SEM), indicating the formation of complexes through ultrasonic-assisted preparation. X-ray diffraction pattern further confirmed the transition from the original A-type structure for native starch to V-type structure for starch-lipid complexes, and the relative crystallinity of starch-lipid complexes increased as the ultrasound intensity and treatment time increased.

Colloidal ionogels: Controlled assembly and self-propulsion upon tunable swelling.

J Colloid Interface Sci

Active colloids driven out of thermal equilibrium serve as building blocks for smart materials with tunable structures and functions. Using chemical energy to drive colloids is advantageous but requires precise control over chemical release. To address this, we developed colloidal ionogels-polymer microspheres infused with ionic liquids-that show controlled assembly and self-propulsion upon tunable swelling.

Exploration of new π-conjugated building blocks for construction of supramolecular polymers is at the forefront of self-assembly. Herein, we incorporate a highly planar anthanthrene skeleton into the design of two supramolecular monomers 1 and 2. Their supramolecular polymerization have been comprehensively investigated by spectroscopic studies.

Modularly organizing active micromachines into high-grade metamachines makes a great leap for operating the microscopic world in a biomimetic way. However, modulating the nonreciprocal interactions among different colloidal motors through chemical reactions to achieve the controllable construction of active colloidal metamachines with specific dynamic properties remains challenging. Here, we report the phototactic active colloidal metamachines constructed by shape-directed dynamic self-assembly of chemically driven peanut-shaped TiO colloidal motors and Janus spherical Pt/SiO colloidal motors.
