Investigations into conversion-type materials such as transition-metal oxides have dominated in energy-storage systems, especially for lithium ion batteries in recent years. A common understanding of taking account of high energy density and high power density allows us to design reasonable electrodes. In this study, the unique FeO@nitrogen-doped carbon (denoted as FeO@NC) nanocapsule with self-formed channels was synthesized based on a facile hydrothermal-coating-annealing route. With respect to the effect of this rational architecture on lithium-storage performance, excellent behavior (a high reversible capacity of 480 mAh g) could be maintained at 20 A g during 1000 cycles, with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.97%. It also means that such a FeO@NC electrode can meet a fast-charge challenge (end-of-charge within ∼2 min). By a series of investigations, we certainly considered that uniform carbon coating improved electrical conductivity and acted as a buffer layer to accommodate volume variations of FeO nanoparticles during cycling. It is more interesting that self-formed channels can effectively shorten the ion diffusion path and provide a necessary space to buffer volume expansion as well. Benefiting from these synergetic advantages, this FeO@NC nanocapsule also delivered outstanding electrochemical performances in full cells.

The voltage is one of limited reliable information for battery management system, and the faults of voltage sampling will result in adverse effects and lead to potential risks for operation, which emphasize the importance for investigating the failure modes of voltage sampling and diagnosis algorithm. In this article, a knowledge-data driven sampling diagnosis algorithm is established and an online intelligent diagnosis algorithm is proposed accordingly based on outlier detection with fuzzy entropy. The fault diagnosis algorithm is established and evaluated under positive exploitation, where the knowledge-base of failure mode based on equivalent simulating models is firstly constructed.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are eco-friendly leaching agents which have emerged as potential candidate for recovery of valuable metals from spent LIBs (lithium-ion batteries). Earlier reports show use of more mount of chemicals, long leaching duration and less efficiency. The present work has been carried out to observe the leaching efficiency of two DES-water blend systems such as ChCl:CA(2:1) +30% HO and ChCl:MA(1:1)+20% HO for the leaching of Li and Co from cathodic material of spent LIBs using design of experiments and optimization through CCD (central composite design) of Response surface methodology(RSM) approach.

Layered sulfide crystals are suitable hosts for lithium and sodium ions in batteries. In this study, new layered lithium titanium sulfide (LTS) crystals were grown in a sealed silica tube using a LiS self-flux at 800-950 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results indicated the formation of a new sulfide phase with higher symmetry in the Li-Ti-S system.

We propose an effective method for selectively extracting the valuable metals from the spent LiNiCoMnO cathode material using an oxalic acid-based deep eutectic solvent. Through regulation of the coordination environment, NiO, CoO, and MnO are stepwise separated and further applied in the electrochemical conversion of raw PET bottles to high-purity formic acid.

2D Nanochannel Interlayer Realizing High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University, Shenzhen, 518055, China.

Commercialization of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is largely limited by polysulfide shuttling and sluggish kinetics. Herein, 2D nanochannel interlayer composed of alternatively-stacked porous silica nanosheets (PSN) and TiCT-MXene are developed. The 2D nanochannels with selective cation transport characteristics facilitate lithium ion rapid transport, while reject the translocation of polysulfide anions across the separator.
