When analyzing multidiameter single-fiber reflectance (MDSFR) spectra, the inhomogeneous distribution of melanin pigments in skin tissue is usually not accounted for. Especially in heavily pigmented skins, this can result in bad fits and biased estimation of tissue optical properties. A model is introduced to account for the inhomogeneous distribution of melanin pigments in skin tissue. visible MDSFR measurements were performed on heavily pigmented skin of type IV to VI. Skin tissue optical properties and related physiological properties were extracted from the measured spectra using the introduced model. The absorption of melanin pigments described by the introduced model demonstrates a good correlation with the co-localized measurement of the well-known melanin index.

Anthocyanins are a type of water-soluble pigments widely distributed in colorful plants, which have been extensively used in food and cosmetics industry. The current production of anthocyanins heavily depends on extraction from plant materials, which leads to low purity and inconsistency among batches. Compared with conventional extraction, microorganism-mediated production of anthocyanins has advantages such as a short production cycle, high purity, low waste production, low energy requirements, and consistency between different batches.

Primates, the most colorful mammalian radiation, have previously served as an interesting model to test the functions and evolutionary drivers of variation in eye color. We assess the contribution of photo-regulatory and communicative functions to the external eye appearance of nine macaque species representing all the branches of their radiation. Macaques' well described social structure and wide geographical distribution make them interesting to explore.

Melanin is a natural pigment in the human body that is primarily found in the skin and hair. It protects the skin from damage by ultraviolet radiation. Although this pigment plays a crucial role in protecting the human body, it represents a challenge for pathologists to evaluate highly pigmented tissue samples from melanoma or pigmented skin lesions.

Intelligently processed black teas (BT) possess premium quality but there is a lack in comprehensive understanding of flavor formation mechanism. In this study, the accumulation of carotenoids, flavonoids, and Maillard products and (non)enzymatic degradations and conjugations to characterized flavors were comprehensively studied. Significant decrease was observed that flava-3-ols were heavily oxidised from > 240 mg·g in fresh leaves (FL) to < 30 mg·g, while other 21 flavonoids decreased by < 30% in BT, accompanied by a sweet aftertaste.

Tomato is the second most valuable vegetable crop, and its susceptibility to tropospheric ozone (O) varies on the cultivar. Eight tomato cultivars with documented O sensitivity were reevaluated using ethylenediurea (400 ppm EDU) to determine the effectiveness of EDU in assessing O sensitivity under heavily O-polluted tropical conditions. EDU helped in amending the growth, photosynthetic pigments, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and yield characteristics in the tomato cultivars.
