Published: December 2019

The piezoelectric actuator (PA) is one of the most commonly used actuators in a micro-positioning stage. But its hysteresis non-linearity can cause error in the piezo-actuated stage. A modified Bouc-Wen model is presented in this paper to describe the hysteresis non-linearity of the piezo-actuated stage. This model can be divided into two categories according to the input frequency: rate-independent type and rate-dependent type. A particle swarm optimization method (PSO) is employed to identify these parameters of the Bouc-Wen hysteresis model. An inverse model feedforward compensator is established based on the modified Bouc-Wen model. The fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller combined with the feedforward compensator is implemented to the piezo-actuated stage. The experimental results indicate that the proposed control strategy can compensate for the hysteresis phenomenon.

Robust composite repetitive control with disturbance observer for high-precision tracking of piezo-actuated nano-stages with measurement delays.

In this paper, a robust composite control strategy in the framework of unified infinite-dimensional H∞ optimal control is developed to support nano-scale periodic tracking with improved non-harmonic disturbance attenuation of piezo-actuated nano-stages with sensor-induced measurement delays. In particular, we analyze the electromechanical coupled dynamics and derive a multi-perturbation model, where an extended Youla-Kucera parameterization-based repetitive controller with a disturbance observer is constructed to optimize control performances on high-precision tracking and perturbation rejection. The controller parameters are solved by using a unified infinite-dimensional H∞ optimization method.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of mechanical design and synthesis methods for piezo-actuated compliant micro-positioning stages, which play an important role in areas where high precision motion is required, including bio-robotics, precision manufacturing, automation, and aerospace. Unlike conventional rigid-link mechanisms, the motion of compliant mechanisms is realized by using flexible elements, whereby deformation requires no lubrication while achieving high movement accuracy without friction. As compliant mechanisms differ significantly from traditional rigid mechanisms, recent research has focused on investigating various technologies and approaches to address challenges in the flexure-based micro-positioning stage in the aspects of synthesis, analysis, material, fabrication, and actuation.

Finite-time adaptive sliding mode control for high-precision tracking of piezo-actuated stages.

ISA Trans

October 2022

Key Laboratory of Airborne Optical Imaging and Measurement, Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun 130033, China. Electronic address:

Piezo-actuated stages are widely used in nanopositioning applications. However, they not only have inherent static hysteresis characteristics but also have dynamic rate-dependent hysteresis nonlinearity. Therefore, to address dynamic hysteresis nonlinearity and uncertainty in the model parameters, an adaptive switching-gain sliding mode controller with a proportional-integral-derivative surface is designed.

Robot-assisted retinal surgery has become increasingly prevalent in recent years in part due to the potential for robots to help surgeons improve the safety of an immensely delicate and difficult set of tasks. The integration of robots into retinal surgery has resulted in diminished surgeon perception of tool-to-tissue interaction forces due to robot's stiffness. The tactile perception of these interaction forces (sclera force) has long been a crucial source of feedback for surgeons who rely on them to guide surgical maneuvers and to prevent damaging forces from being applied to the eye.
