We previously reported the beneficial effects of tendon transfer to eliminate extension lag of the interphalangeal joints, using the extensor carpi radialis longus prolonged by palmaris longus tendon grafts after crushing-penetrating injuries around the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint of the middle finger. We used the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) as the alternative donor muscle and treated two cases of severe crushing injuries to MP joint, and then obtained good outcomes.

Clonus is characterized by involuntary, rhythmic, oscillatory muscle contractions, typically triggered by rapid muscle stretching and is frequently associated with spastic equinovarus foot (SEVF), where it may increase risk of falls and cause discomfort, pain, and sleep disorders. We hypothesize that selective diagnostic nerve block (DNB) of the tibial nerve motor branches can help identify which muscle is primarily responsible for clonus in patients with SEVF and provide useful information for botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A) treatment. This retrospective study explored which calf muscles contributed to clonus in 91 patients with SEFV after stroke (n = 31), multiple sclerosis (n = 21), and cerebral palsy (n = 39), using selective DNB.

Concentric Needle Electromyography Findings in Patients with Ulnar Neuropathy at the Elbow.

NeuroSci

December 2024

Institute of Clinical Neurophysiology, Division of Neurology, University Medical Center Ljubljana, Zaloška cesta 7, 1525 Ljubljana, Slovenia.

In ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), the degree of neuropathic changes, the sensitivity of needle electromyography (EMG) in individual ulnar muscles, and the utility of individual EMG parameters are controversial. I compared qualitative needle EMG findings in two ulnar-innervated hands muscles and two ulnar-innervated forearm muscles in a group of previously reported UNE patients. Altogether, 170 UNE patients (175 arms) were studied.

Enchondroma rarely occurs in the distal phalanx, and avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon in this area is also rare. We report a case of recurrent enchondroma in the distal phalanx, which required reconstruction for an accidental FDP avulsion during surgery. A 36-year-old right-handed woman visited our hospital with a suspected recurrence of enchondroma and a planned surgery.

Syntaxin 4-enhanced plasma membrane repair isindependent of dysferlin in skeletal muscle.

Am J Physiol Cell Physiol

December 2024

Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA.

Plasma membrane repair (PMR) restores membrane integrity of cells, preventing cell death in vital organs, and has been studied extensively in skeletal muscle. Dysferlin, a sarcolemmal Ca-binding protein, plays a crucial role in PMR in skeletal muscle. Previous studies have suggested that PMR employs membrane trafficking and membrane fusion, similar to neurotransmission.

Objectives: Repeated gripping with high grip forces and high rates of grip force development are risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome. As the nerve's adaptive ability is crucial to prevent disease progression, we investigated how these risk factors influence median nerve deformation and displacement over the time course of a repeated pinch grip task.

Methods: Seventeen healthy participants performed a repeated grip task against a load cell while their carpal tunnel was scanned with ultrasound.
