(CPT1a) is a rate-limited enzyme in the mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation pathway. It acts as a bridge between and the fatty acid oxidation pathways and is closely related to ruminant growth and development. In this study, one 12 bp InDel polymorphism of the gene was identified in 700 goats, and we designated these three genotypes II, ID, and DD. Association analysis showed that the InDel polymorphism was closely associated with trunk index ( = 0.008) and body length index ( = 0.034) in Hainan black goats, and body length ( = 0.010), chest circumference ( = 0.004), chest depth ( = 0.029), and huckle bone width ( = 0.002) in Nubian goats, as well as the chest circumference ( = 0.016) in the Fuqing goat breed. In both kids and adult goats, qRT-PCR results showed that the gene was expressed in all tissues, showing the highest mRNA levels in the liver, lung, spleen, and kidney, followed by the adipose tissue and brain. This indicates an association between the InDel of the gene and growth traits in selected goat breeds, which may facilitate marker-assisted selection in goat genetics and breeding.

Article Synopsis
  • Heat stress (HS) prompts neuroinflammation and cognitive issues in the brain, leading to a study that compared the gene expression of mouse hippocampal tissue under HS conditions versus control.
  • Analysis showed that HS exposure resulted in 210 differentially expressed genes, indicating significant changes, with 72 genes upregulated and 138 downregulated.
  • Notably, the study found that taurine treatment could improve cognitive functions affected by HS, suggesting potential strategies for mitigating heat-induced cognitive impairments in vulnerable groups.

Prime editing (PE) is a CRISPR-based tool for genome engineering that can be applied to generate human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-based disease models. PE technology safely introduces point mutations, small insertions, and deletions (indels) into the genome. It uses a Cas9-nickase (nCas9) fused to a reverse transcriptase (RT) as an editor and a PE guide RNA (pegRNA), which introduces the desired edit with great precision without creating double-strand breaks (DSBs).

Greenbug, , is one of the important cereal aphid pests of sorghum in the United States and other parts of the world. variety PI 607900 carries the resistance () gene that underlies plant resistance to greenbug biotype I (GBI). Now, the has been determined as the major gene conferring greenbug resistance based on the strong association of its presence with the resistance phenotype in sorghum.

Article Synopsis
  • Cold stress during the booting stage of rice severely impacts yields, especially in colder regions, prompting a study on the Ctb1 gene for developing cold-tolerant rice varieties.
  • Researchers identified key genetic variations (InDels and SNPs) in the Ctb1 promoter, with a specific InDel at -1,302 bp significantly enhancing Ctb1 expression and cold tolerance.
  • The introduction of this beneficial InDel into a cold-sensitive rice variety led to substantial improvements in cold survival, seed setting rates, and overall yield, highlighting its importance for breeding resilient rice.

Red deer is a species of family Cervidae that is widely distributed in the world and is often raised to provide antlers, as a trophy or traditional medicine materials, and meat. Currently, the whole genomic data for red deer are very limited. Qingyuan Wapiti (QYW), China's first breed of red deer by artificial breeding, is well known for its high yield of antlers and large body size.
