We present a technique that improves the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) of range-finding, sensing, and other light-detection applications. The technique filters out low photon numbers using photon-number-resolving detectors. This technique has no classical analog and cannot be done with classical detectors. We investigate the properties of our technique and show under what conditions the scheme surpasses the classical SNR. Finally, we simulate the operation of a rangefinder, showing improvement with a low number of signal samplings and confirming the theory with a high number of signal samplings.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the major cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, with no universally recognized effective treatments currently available. In recent years, ginseng and its principal active components, such as ginsenosides, have shown potential protective effects in the treatment of these liver diseases. In NAFLD, studies have demonstrated that ginseng can improve hepatic lipid metabolism, reduce inflammatory responses, and inhibit oxidative stress and fibrosis, thereby attenuating the progression of NAFLD.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) progression is often marked by early glomerular endothelial cell (GEC) dysfunction, including alterations in the fenestration size and number linked to impaired glomerular filtration. However, the cellular mechanisms regulating GEC fenestrations remain poorly understood due to limitations in existing models, challenges in imaging small fenestrations , and inconsistencies between and findings. This study used a logic-based protein-protein interaction network model with normalized Hill functions for dynamics to explore how glucose-mediated signaling dysregulation impacts fenestration dynamics in GECs.

Recent single-cell experiments that measure copy numbers of over 40 proteins in individual cells at different time points [time-stamped snapshot (TSS) data] exhibit cell-to-cell variability. Because the same cells cannot be tracked over time, TSS data provide key information about the time-evolution of protein abundances that could yield mechanisms that underlie signaling kinetics. We recently developed a generalized method of moments (GMM) based approach that estimates parameters of mechanistic models using TSS data.

Cryo-EM structure of the conjugation H-pilus reveals the cyclic nature of the TrhA pilin.

Conjugation, the major driver of the spread of antimicrobial resistance genes, relies on a conjugation pilus for DNA transfer. Conjugative pili, such as the F-pilus, are dynamic tubular structures, composed of a polymerized pilin, that mediate the initial donor-recipient interactions, a process known as mating pair formation (MPF). IncH are low-copy-number plasmids, traditionally considered broad host range, which are found in bacteria infecting both humans and animals.

Coumarins, a group of naturally occurring compounds, have been reported to demonstrate anticancer potential. These substances, distinguished by their combined benzene and α-pyrone rings, have been demonstrated to impact multiple cellular mechanisms essential for the initiation and advancement of cancer. These agents work in different ways that prevent different tumor cells from growing, spreading, and increasing.
