Published: November 2019

Inhomogeneous strain applied to lattice systems can induce artificial gauge fields for particles moving on this lattice. Here we demonstrate how to engineer a novel state of matter, namely an antiferromagnet with a Landau-level excitation spectrum of magnons. We consider a honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg model and show that triaxial strain leads to equally spaced pseudo-Landau levels at the upper end of the magnon spectrum, with degeneracies characteristic of emergent supersymmetry. We also present a particular strain protocol which induces perfectly quantized magnon Landau levels over the whole bandwidth. We discuss experimental realizations and generalizations.

2025 Roadmap on 3D Nano-magnetism.

J Phys Condens Matter

November 2024

Institute of Applied Physics, Vienna University of Technology, Wiedner Hauptstr. 8-10/134, Wien, 1040, AUSTRIA.

The transition from planar (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) magnetic nanostructures represents a significant advancement in both fundamental research and practical applications, offering vast potential for next-generation technologies like ultrahigh-density storage, memory, logic, and neuromorphic computing. Despite being a relatively new field, the emergence of 3D nanomagnetism presents numerous opportunities for innovation, prompting the creation of a comprehensive roadmap by leading international researchers. This roadmap aims to facilitate collaboration and interdisciplinary dialogue to address challenges in materials science, physics, engineering, and computing.

Electrical Excitation and Detection of Chiral Magnons in a Compensated Ferrimagnetic Insulator.

Magnon chirality refers to the precessional handedness of magnetization around the external magnetic field, which is fixed as right-handed in ferromagnets. Compensated ferrimagnets accommodate parallel and antiparallel configurations of net magnetization and angular momentum, and thus serve as an ideal platform for studying magnon chirality. Through performing spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance experiments, we experimentally study the reversal of low-frequency magnon chirality across the magnetization and angular momentum compensation temperatures in a Gd_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12}/Pt bilayer.

Bistability, a universal phenomenon found in diverse fields such as biology, chemistry, and physics, describes a scenario in which a system has two stable equilibrium states and resets to one of the two states. The ability to switch between these two states is the basis for a wide range of applications, particularly in memory and logic operations. Here, we present a universal approach to achieve bistable switching in magnonics, the field processing data using spin waves.

Using all-optical time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements we demonstrate an efficient modulation of the spin-wave (SW) dynamics via the bias magnetic field orientation around nanoscale diamond shaped antidots that are arranged on a square lattice within a [Co(0.75 nm)/Pd(0.9 nm)]multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA).

We investigate the magnetization dynamics in nanomagnet vertices often found in artificial spin ices. Our analysis involves creating a simplified model that depicts edge magnetization using magnetic charges. We utilize the model to explore the energy landscape, its associated curvatures, and the fundamental modes.
