The (GGGGCC)n repeat expansion in C9orf72, which is the most common cause of frontotemporal dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is translated through repeat-associated non-AUG (RAN) translation. In this issue of Neuron, Cheng et al. (2019) report that the helicase DDX3X, which unwinds (or relaxes) RNA, suppresses RAN translation and toxicity.

Background: Erectile dysfunction is a condition with a rapidly increasing prevalence globally with a strong correlation to the increase in obesity and cardiovascular disease rates.

Aim: The aim of the current study is to investigate the potential role of tubacin, a histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) inhibitor, in restoring erectile function in a hypercholesterolemia-induced endothelial dysfunction model.

Methods: Thirty-nine male C57Bl/6 J mice were divided into 3 groups.

Simultaneous Concentration and T Mapping of Brain Metabolites by Fast Multi-Echo Spectroscopic Imaging.

NMR Biomed

February 2025

MR Methodology, Department for Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland.

The purpose of this study was to produce metabolite-specific T and concentration maps in a clinically compatible time frame. A multi-TE 2D MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) experiment (multi-echo single-shot MRSI [MESS-MRSI]) deployed truncated and partially sampled multi-echo trains from single scans and was combined with simultaneous multiparametric model fitting. It was tested in vivo for the brain in five healthy subjects.

Background: Microvascular dysfunction (MVD) is a recognized sign of disease in heart failure progression. Intact blood vessels exhibit abnormal vasoreactivity in early stage, subsequently deteriorating to rarefaction and reduced perfusion. In managing heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), earlier diagnosis is key to improving management.

Molecular dynamics simulation of an aqueous solution of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide, LiTFSA, was performed at various concentrations to relate its liquid structure with frequency-dependent shear viscosity. The structure factor exhibited a low- peak that represents a heterogeneous structure composed of water and anion domains, and the lithium ion existed in the water domain due to its strong hydration. The frequency-dependent shear viscosity showed bimodal relaxation, and the relative contribution of the slower mode increased with an increase in the salt concentration.

Vasculo-Protective Effects of Standardized Black Chokeberry Extracts in Mice Aorta.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Department III Functional Sciences-Pathophysiology, Faculty of Medicine, "Victor Babeș" University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Timișoara, E. Murgu Sq., No. 2, 300041 Timisoara, Romania.

Black chokeberry ( Elliot) represents a rich source of dietary polyphenols and other bioactive phytochemicals with pleiotropic beneficial cardiovascular effects. The present study was aimed at evaluating the ex vivo effects of two black chokeberry extracts (BChEs), obtained from either dry (DryAr) or frozen (FrozAr) berries, on oxidative stress and vascular function in mice aortic rings after incubation with angiotensin 2 (Ang 2), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and glucose (GLUC) in order to mimic renin-angiotensin system activation, inflammation and hyperglycemia.
