Anton syndrome is characterised by visual anosognosia. It results from damage to both occipital lobes, while the anterior visual pathways remain intact. We describe four cases of Anton's syndrome. First case is that of a 73-year-old woman, who presented with two separate events of intraparenchymal brain haemorrhage, 4 years apart. Her first stroke affected the left and second affected the right occipital lobe. Bilateral occipital lobe damage resulted in cortical blindness. Second case is an 88-year-old man, who suffered from two ischaemic strokes, 2 days apart. Each stroke involved one posterior cerebral artery. This resulted in bilateral occipital and temporal lobe infarcts. Third case is a 64-year-old woman with chronic renal failure, who suffered bilateral occipital lobe infarction after haemodialysis, due to posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. Last case is that of an 80-year-old woman who suffered a basilar artery stroke, resulting in bilateral thalamic, temporal and occipital lobe infarction.

Processing pathways between sensory and default mode network (DMN) regions support recognition, navigation, and memory but their organisation is not well understood. We show that functional subdivisions of visual cortex and DMN sit at opposing ends of parallel streams of information processing that support visually mediated semantic and spatial cognition, providing convergent evidence from univariate and multivariate task responses, intrinsic functional and structural connectivity. Participants learned virtual environments consisting of buildings populated with objects, drawn from either a single semantic category or multiple categories.

Myelin loss induces neural dysfunction and contributes to the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases, injury conditions, and aging. Because remyelination is often incomplete, better understanding endogenous remyelination and developing remyelination therapies that restore neural function are clinical imperatives. The human brain possesses the ability to automatically extract statistical regularities from environmental inputs, including visual-graphic symbols and printed units. However, the specific brain regions underlying the statistical learning of these visual-graphic symbols or artificial orthography remain unclear. This study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with an artificial orthography learning paradigm to measure brain activities associated with the statistical learning of radical positional regularities embedded in pseudocharacters containing high (100%), moderate (80%), and low (60%) levels of consistency, along with a series of random abstract figures.

Human brain evolution is marked by a disproportionate expansion of cortical regions associated with advanced perceptual and cognitive functions. While this expansion is often attributed to the emergence of novel specialized brain areas, modifications to evolutionarily conserved cortical regions also have been linked to species-specific behaviors.
