Left renal vein aneurysm in a young woman with renal nutcracker syndrome.

Division of Vascular Surgery, Columbia University Medical Center, New York, NY.

Published: December 2019

A 17-year-old girl presented to our institution with abdominal and pelvic pain found to be due to extrinsic compression of the left renal vein, causing a saccular aneurysm and renal vein dilation with varices consistent with nutcracker syndrome. She was managed with an open aneurysm resection and transposition of the left renal vein.

Background: Renal cell carcinoma tends to invade venous structures, frequently extending beyond the inferior vena cava and into the heart itself, such as into the right atrium or right ventricle. Resection of tumor burden, particularly tumor thrombus, often requires cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA), which is not feasible for all patients.

Methods: Described in this study is a novel, minimally invasive endovascular approach involving endovascular thrombectomy as a viable approach in these select patients.

Background: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) and osteoarthritis (OA) are two common diagnoses for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). The early surgical complications in THA for ONFH compared to OA are inconsistently reported. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate whether THA for ONFH was associated with early postoperative complications in comparison to THA for OA using a large database of Japanese patients.

Microfluidic vessel-on-chip platform for investigation of cellular defects in venous malformations and responses to various shear stress and flow conditions.

Lab Chip

January 2025

Oulu Center for Cell-Matrix Research, Biocenter Oulu and Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, University of Oulu, P.O. Box 5000, FI-90014 Oulu, Finland.

A novel microfluidic platform was designed to study the cellular architecture of endothelial cells (ECs) in an environment replicating the 3D organization and flow of blood vessels. In particular, the platform was constructed to investigate EC defects in slow-flow venous malformations (VMs) under varying shear stress and flow conditions. The platform featured a standard microtiter plate footprint containing 32 microfluidic units capable of replicating wall shear stress (WSS) in normal veins and enabling precise control of shear stress and flow directionality without the need for complex pumping systems.

Department of Radiology, Nurturing Center of Jiangsu Province for State Laboratory of AI Imaging & Interventional Radiology, Zhongda Hospital, School of Medicine, Southeast University, Nanjing, China.

To explore the value of vessel wall MRI (VW-MRI) in the preoperative assessment of T3 renal-cell carcinoma (RCC) with varying degrees of longitudinal venous system invasion. Patients with RCC with pathological T3 stage between January 2016 and December 2023 were included in this retrospective study. All the patients underwent contrast-enhanced CT (CECT), conventional MRI (con-MRI) or VW-MRI.
