Case Report of Childhood-Onset Psychosis in a Patient with a Known WNT10A Mutation.

J Can Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry

Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Ottawa, Ontario.

Published: November 2019

Objective: To report on a patient with childhood-onset psychosis at age 12 with a known WNT10A mutation.

Methods: Case report.

Results: The patient is a 12-year-old male who presented with an acute onset of psychosis in the context of a known WNT10A mutation.

Conclusion: WNT genes have only been previously linked to schizophrenia on a theoretical basis. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of an association between a childhood-onset psychosis and a WNT10A mutation. We conclude that there is a possibility that WNT10A may be one of the many genes contributing to the development of childhood-onset schizophrenia.

Background: Functional impairment is a major concern among those presenting to youth mental health services and can have a profound impact on long-term outcomes. Early recognition and prevention for those at risk of functional impairment is essential to guide effective youth mental health care. Yet, identifying those at risk is challenging and impacts the appropriate allocation of indicated prevention and early intervention strategies.

Background: Psychiatric disorders (PDs) are common among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Brain-gut dysfunction and psychotropic medications may have adverse effects on postoperative outcomes in patients with IBD. This study aimed to evaluate the association between PD and outcomes after surgery for IBD.

Multiple complex developmental disorder (MCDD): Did we throw the baby out with the bathwater too fast? A systematic review.

Clin Child Psychol Psychiatry

January 2025

Department of Mental Health and Pathological Addiction, Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry Service,Azienda USL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia, Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Multiple Complex Developmental Disorder (MCDD) is a condition that affects various areas of development and could be seen as lying between autism and childhood-onset schizophrenia, but interest in it has decreased over time.
  • This study systematically reviewed literature on MCDD to evaluate its current significance, finding only 16 relevant studies that varied widely in methodology and focus.
  • The analysis revealed that children with MCDD tended to experience more paranoia and psychotic symptoms compared to those with autism, highlighting a potential diagnostic gap that warrants further investigation.

Childhood-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with substantial psychiatric morbidity in later life, but it remains unknown whether these associations are due to common underlying biological mechanisms or the impacts of living with the condition and its treatment. Here, using Czech national register data, we identified children with T1D aged ≤14 years between 1994 and 2007 and estimated the risk of psychiatric disorders up to 24 years later. We found that children diagnosed with T1D had an elevated risk of developing substance use, mood, anxiety and personality disorders, and behavioral syndromes.

Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) are characterized by substantial clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Multiple recurrent copy number variants (CNVs) increase risk for SSDs; however, how known risk CNVs and broader genome-wide CNVs influence clinical variability is unclear. The current study examined associations between borderline intellectual functioning or childhood-onset psychosis, known risk CNVs, and burden of deletions affecting genes in 18 previously validated neurodevelopmental gene-sets in 618 SSD individuals.
