Cyclodextrins, since their discovery in the late 19th century, were mainly regarded as excipients. Nevertheless, developments in cyclodextrin research have shown that some of these hosts can capture and include biomolecules, highlighting fatty acids and cholesterol, which implies that they are not inert and that their action may be used in specific medicinal purposes. The present review, centered on literature reports from the year 2000 until the present day, presents a comprehensive description of the known biological activities of cyclodextrins and their implications for medicinal applications. The paper is divided into two main sections, one devoted to the properties and applications of cyclodextrins as active pharmaceutical ingredients in a variety of pathologies, from infectious ailments to cardiovascular dysfunctions and metabolic diseases. The second section is dedicated to the use of cyclodextrins in a range of biomedical technologies.

Since its conceptualization, click chemistry in all its variants has proven to be a superior synthesis protocol, compared to conventional methods, for forming new covalent bonds under mild conditions, orthogonally, and with high yields. If a term like reactive resilience could be established, click reactions would be good examples, as they perform better under increasingly challenging conditions. Particularly, highly hindered couplings that perform poorly with conventional chemistry protocols-such as those used to conjugate biomacromolecules (e.

Article Synopsis
  • A hydrophobically associative polymer (HAP) was combined with β-cyclodextrin and epichlorohydrin polycondensate (β-CDP) to boost intermolecular interactions in water, improving thickening and viscoelastic properties.
  • The resulting host-guest inclusion system showed unique viscosity-temperature characteristics and variable activation energy, enhancing the solution's performance in oil recovery applications.
  • Tests indicated that the β-CDP/HAP mixture outperformed pure HAP and other solutions, achieving a 5.5% and 9.3% greater oil recovery than HAP and a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide solution, respectively, making it more effective for high-temperature oil extraction.

Triol-type ginsenoside Re (GS-Re) exhibits potent anti-myocardial ischemia-reperfusion effects, but its clinical use is hindered by poor bioavailability. This study evaluates the impact of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion on GS-Re bioavailability and tissue dynamics in rat models. The GS-Re-β-CD complex was prepared using aqueous stirring and characterized.

Electronic address:

In order to overcome the technical challenges of poor stability and weak antibacterial effects of individual essential oil in food preservation applications, the present study aimed to encapsulate cinnamon and clove essential oil compound by using spray-drying technique. The combination of cinnamon and clove essential oils was determined to have good synergistic bacteriostatic effects by the checkerboard dilution method, and the best bacteriostatic effect could be obtained when the volume ratio was 7:3 for compounding. Microcapsules were prepared using hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) as wall material and compound essential oil as core material, the optimal conditions for the microcapsule preparation process through a one-way test were: homogenizing speed of 8000 r/min, wall material addition of 2 %, HPCD to EO ratio of 1:3, EO to T-80 ratio of 1.

Supramolecular Engineering of Nanoceria for Management and Amelioration of Age-Related Macular Degeneration via the Two-Level Blocking of Oxidative Stress and Inflammation.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Eye Center, The Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Zhejiang Provincial Clinical Research Center for Eye Diseases, Zhejiang Provincial Engineering Institute on Eye Diseases, Zhejiang University, 88 Jiefang Road, Hangzhou, 310009, China.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), is the global leading cause of irreversible blindness. Current first-line therapeutics, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonists, often yield incomplete and suboptimal vision improvement, necessitating the exploration of novel and efficacious therapeutic approaches. Herein, a supramolecular engineering strategy to construct moringin (MOR) loaded α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) coated nanoceria (M@CCNP) is constructed, where the hydroxy and newly formed carbonyl groups of α-CD interact with the nanoceria surface via O─Ce conjunction and the isothiocyanate group of MOR inserts deeply into the α-CD cavity via host-guest interaction.
