The perfluorochemical components of synthetic oxygen transporting emulsions may persist in hepatic tissue. After a single 30% blood exchange with the perfluorochemical emulsion, Fluosol-DA 20%, the effects on the microsomal metabolism of 7-methoxycoumarin and 7-ethoxycoumarin were studied over a 9-week period. Fluosol-DA treated animals were compared with controls (sham) and hetastarch-treated controls.

T- and B-splenic lymphocyte frequency, immune response 4 days after immunization with sheep red blood cells (SRBC), and proliferative response to concanavalin A (Con A) were determined 1, 3, and 5 days after exchange transfusion with Fluosol DA 20% (FDA) in adult, male Sprague-Dawley rats vs sham transfused rats. T-cell, T-helper, T-suppressor, and B-lymphocyte were reduced 1 day after transfusion (P less than or equal to 0.001).

The liquid/gas partition coefficients of three inhalation anesthetics in Fluosol-DA 20% (Fluosol), a perfluorocarbon blood substitute, were determined in vitro. The high values found (6.68 for halothane, 7.

Effects of perfluorochemical (PFC) and glycerol on energy metabolism in cerebral ischaemia were examined by the sequential measurements of in vivo 31P-NMR spectrum using topical magnetic resonance (TMR). Experimental cerebral ischaemia was induced in forty-five Wistar rats by a four-vessel occlusion method. The 31P-NMR spectrum and the EEG were monitored during preischaemic and ischaemic periods and after circulation was restored for various periods up to 240 min.
