Solid-state Li-ion batteries (SSLIBs) have recently attracted substantial attention from scientists for the advantages of better safety performance. However, there are still several key challenges in SSLIBs that need to be addressed, such as low energy density, poor thermal stability or cycle stability, and large interface resistance. This contribution introduces a novel SSLIB with a porous aromatic framework (PAF-1) accommodating LiPF that was used as the solid-state electrolyte (SSE) replacing the liquid electrolyte and diaphragm of traditional Li-ion batteries. The charge, discharge capacity, rate performance and cycle stability of the SSLIB were remarkably enhanced.

Designing spent graphite anodes from lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for applications beyond regenerated batteries offers significant potential for promoting the recycling of spent LIBs. The battery-grade graphite, characterized by a highly graphitized structure, demonstrates excellent conductive loss capabilities, making it suitable for microwave absorption. During the Li-ion intercalation and deintercalation processes in battery operation, the surface layer of spent graphite (SG) becomes activated, forming oxygen-rich functional groups that enhance the polarization loss mechanism.

We report a silicon anode for lithium-ion batteries consisting of a layer of 100% nanotubes directly bonded to copper foil. The process involved silicon deposition on a sacrificial zinc oxide nanorod film and removal of zinc oxide to produce a nanotube film directly on thin copper foils. The thickness of resulting films ranged from 9 to 20 μm with Si nanotubes having diameters of 200-400 nm and lengths of 2-10 μm.

This research using the first-principles theory introduces Pd- and Pt-functionalized WSe monolayers as promising materials for detecting three critical gases (H, CO, and CH), to evaluate the health of Li-ion battery (LIBs). Various sites on the pristine WSe monolayer are considered for the functionalization with Pd and Pt atoms. The adsorption performances of the determined Pd- and Pt-WSe monolayers upon the three gases are analyzed by the comparative highlight of the adsorption energy, bonding behavior and electron transfer.

Li-ion capacitors (LICs) integrate the desirable features of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and supercapacitors (SCs), but the kinetic imbalance between the both electrodes leads to inferior electrochemical performance. Thus, constructing an advanced anode with outstanding rate capability and terrific redox kinetics is crucial to LICs. Herein, heterostructured ZnS/SnS2 nanosheets encapsulated into N-doped carbon microcubes (ZnS/SnS2@NC) are successfully fabricated.

The energy density of layered oxides of Li-ion batteries can be enhanced by inducing oxygen redox through replacing transition metal (TM) ions with Li ions in the TM layer. Undesirably, the cathodes always suffer from unfavorable structural degradation, which is closely associated with irreversible TM migration and slab gliding, resulting in continuous capacity and voltage decay. Herein, attention is paid to the Li ions in the TM layer (Li) and find their extra effects beyond inducing oxygen redox, which has been rarely mentioned.
