Published: May 2020

A novel bacterial strain, named S23, was isolated from chicken meat of local market in Korea. Cells were Gram-negative, milky-yellow colored, non-motile and coccobacillus. The strain was obligate aerobic and catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, optimum growth temperature and pH were 25 °C and pH 7.0, respectively. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain S23 belongs to the genus Acinetobacter and is most closely related to Acinetobacter defluvii KCTC 52503 (97.40%). The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value between strain S23 and its closet phylogenetic neighbors was below 76% and 17%, respectively. The G + C content of genomic DNA of strain S23 was 41.53 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was Q-9. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (comprising Cω7c and/or Cω6c), Cω9c, and C. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanol-amine, and phosphatidylserine. The ANI and dDDH results and results of the genotypic analysis in combination with chemotaxonomic and physiological data demonstrated that strain S23 represented a novel species within the genus Acinetobacter, for which the name Acinetobacter pullicarnis sp. nov. is proposed. The strain type is S23 (= KACC 19921 = JCM 33150).

Article Synopsis
  • The objective of the study was to analyze the physiological changes in heart and lung function in preterm neonates experiencing hypoxemic respiratory failure (HRF) during septic shock, particularly focusing on those needing medication support.
  • The research included a cohort of preterm infants (under 34 weeks gestational age) from a neonatal intensive care unit between 2015 and 2022, comparing those with and without HRF based on echocardiography findings.
  • Results indicated that while pulmonary vascular resistance and right ventricular function were similar in both groups, the HRF group exhibited significantly reduced left ventricular function, suggesting a need for further research on supporting heart function in these neonates.

fitness of gene-dependent sulfonamide-resistant in the mammalian gut.

Key Laboratory of Specialty Agri-products Quality and Hazard Controlling Technology of Zhejiang Province, College of Life Sciences, China Jiliang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied the fitness costs associated with sulfonamide resistance genes in bacteria using a mouse model, discovering that certain gene-dependent strains incur significant fitness drawbacks.
  • They isolated compensatory mutant strains (CMSs) that managed to outcompete parent strains through genetic mutations, specifically single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).
  • Proteomic analysis revealed that these CMSs had notable changes in key proteins that helped them adapt to the gut environment by improving their motility, tolerance to stress, and overall colonization abilities.

Background: Citrobacter species are Gram-negative opportunistic pathogens commonly reported in nosocomial-acquired infections. This study characterised four Citrobacter species that were isolated from surface water in the North West Province, South Africa.

Results: Phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the isolates demonstrated their ability to produce the extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL).
