Clinicians often assume that interventions directly influence the recovery of patients with musculoskeletal impairments. In reality, other factors may influence recovery more than the direct treatment provided. The most powerful factor may be upstream effects such as economic stability, education, health and health care, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context-commonly termed the social determinant of health (SDH). Although a single empirical pathway linking the collective impacts of the SDH to musculoskeletal health outcomes has not been established, our view is that they exert tremendous effects on physical therapy outcomes in practice and research. In this Viewpoint, the authors discuss the SDH and argue that recognizing the impact of SDHs on health behavior is vital to seeing the whole picture related to musculoskeletal recovery. .

This narrative review synthesizes evidence on the impact of sleep on athletic performance, the prevalence and causes of sleep disturbances, and effective monitoring and intervention strategies to enhance sleep quality and duration. A comprehensive review of case studies, observational studies, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar up to July 2024. Sleep plays a crucial role in the overall well-being and performance of athletes, yet sleep issues are highly prevalent due to factors such as competition schedules, psychological stress, and travel across time zones.

Background: Liver transplantation (LT) is a critical intervention for individuals with end-stage liver disease; yet, post-transplant problems, especially infections, graft rejection, and chronic liver disease, are often linked to systemic inflammation. Cytokines, small signaling molecules, significantly influence immune responses during and post-liver transplantation. Nonetheless, the intricate relationships among cytokines, immune responses, and the gut microbiota, especially gut dysbiosis, are still inadequately comprehended.

While silk fibroin (SF) obtained from silkworm cocoons is expected to become a next-generation natural polymer, a fabrication method for SF-based artificial nerve conduits (SFCs) has not yet been established. Here, we report a bioresorbable SFC, fabricated using a novel freeze-thaw process, which ensures biosafety by avoiding any harmful chemical additives. The SFC demonstrated favorable biocompatibility (high hydrophilicity and porosity with a water content of > 90%), structural stability (stiffness, toughness, and elasticity), and biodegradability, making it an ideal candidate for nerve regeneration.
