Interpenetration in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can have significant impacts on the structure, porous nature, and functional applications of MOFs. Considered to be disadvantageous in the initial phases leading to a decrease in surface area, interpenetration has proved to be highly useful for modulation of pore size and selective separation of gases. The importance of interpenetration has been realized over the last decade, and numerous approaches to graft interpenetration and utilize it for improved functions and applications have been achieved. Several factors such as temperature, solvent system, time duration and steric aspects of the ligands have been utilized to regulate the degree of interpenetration (DOI). In this review, we summarize recent advances in regulating the DOI in MOFs and its impact on the resulting properties.

Various polycations and polyanions were sequentially adsorbed onto the gold electrode of a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. The study focused on determining the adsorption kinetics, viscoelastic properties, and electroresponsivity of polyelectrolyte layers. For the first time, it was demonstrated that the structure (compact or expanded) of the layers can be determined by electroresponsivity.

In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran (Dex) were chemically modified to obtain amino-functionalized PEG (PEG-(NH)) and oxidized dextran (ODex). They were subsequently reacted via -NH and -CHO groups to synthesize a macromolecular Schiff base particle. The structures, morphologies, and thermal properties of the macromolecular Schiff base particle were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA).

To develop a stable hydrogel drug carrier with excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability and low toxicity, a green biomass-based hydrogel was prepared as a methylene blue (MB) drug carrier model using cellulose and sodium alginate (SA) polysaccharide. The addition of nanocellulose (CNF) and hydrothermally prepared carbon microspheres to the hydrogel network formed by SA undergoing chelation with Ca enhanced the multifaceted properties of the drug carrier. Additionally, the prepared SA-CNFgel could withstand a pressure of 8.

A systematic investigation was conducted to synthesize hybrid composite materials that use synthetic poly--vinylpyrrolidone and natural (agar-agar) macromolecules with plasticizers (PEG-400) and mineral filler shungite by means of electron irradiation. The XRD and SEM data showed that the structure of the resulting hybrid composites is an interpenetrating network with distributed particles of mineral component. It has been established that the mechanical properties of hybrid composites are determined mainly by the structural organization of the interpenetrating polymer network formed under electron irradiation of the initial synthetic and natural polymer mixture in the presence of plasticizers, as well as by the conditions for intercalation of polymer segments into the mineral matrix and vice versa.

Qualitative and quantitative aspects of the formation of various types of phase structures, sizes and compositions were considered. For the studied polycaprolactone-epoxy resin/4,4'-diaminediphenylsulfone system, a phase diagram characterized by amorphous separation with a lower critical solution temperature was constructed and its evolution was traced with increasing conversion degree of epoxy groups. A method is proposed for determining the temperature-concentration parameters that determine the type of phase structure of composite materials, based on the optical interferometry method.
