Low temperature is one of the key environmental stresses that impair plant growth and significantly restricts the productivity and spatial distribution of crop plants. , a wild diploid cotton species, has adapted to a wide range of temperatures and exhibits a better tolerance to chilling stress. Here, we compared phenotypes and physiochemical changes in under cold stress and found this species indeed showed better cold tolerance. Therefore, to understand the molecular mechanisms of the cold tolerance in , we compared transcription changes in leaves of under cold stress by high-throughput transcriptome sequencing. In total, 35 617 unigenes were identified in the whole-genome transcription profile, and 4226 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were discovered in the leaves upon cold treatment. Gene Ontology (GO) classification analyses showed that the majority of DEGs belonged to categories of signal transduction, transcription factors (TFs) and carbohydrate transport and metabolism. The expression of several cold-responsive genes such as , , and abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis genes involved in different signalling pathways were induced after seedlings were exposed to cold stress. Furthermore, cold sensitivity was increased in and virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) plants, and high level of malondialdehyde (MDA) showed that the and silenced plants were under oxidative stress compared to their wild types, which relatively had higher levels of antioxidant enzyme activity, as evident by high levels of proline and superoxide dismutase (SOD) content. In conclusion, our findings reveal a new regulatory network of cold stress response in and broaden our understanding of the cold tolerance mechanism in cotton, which might accelerate functional genomics studies and genetic improvement for cold stress tolerance in cultivated cotton.

Cold exposure reinstates NAD levels and attenuates hepatocellular carcinoma.

Cold exposure has been historically used for medicinal purposes, but its benefits and associated mechanisms in mammalian organisms still remain unclear. Here, we explore the chemoprotective properties of cold temperature using a mouse model of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that recapitulates several human features. Chronic cold exposure is shown to prolong lifespan in diseased mice, enhance liver health, and suppress the development of aggressive HCC, preventing hepatocellular hypertrophy, high-grade oval cell hyperplasia, liver steatosis, and aberrant hepatocyte hyperproliferation.

The Jacalin-related lectins () gene family play a crucial role in regulating plant development and responding to environmental stress. However, a systematic bioinformatics analysis of the gene family in Gramineae plants has been lacking. In this study, we identified 101 JRL proteins from five Gramineae species and classified them into eight distinct clades.

Purpose: We aimed to analyze the influence of different designs (inlay, onlay, and crown) on stress distribution and crack propagation in an endodontically treated cracked premolar.

Methods: Three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to model an endodontically treated cracked premolar with three different restorations (inlay, onlay, and crown). Six types of loadings (vertical loading of 600 N; hot thermal-600 N vertical coupling loading; cold thermal-600 N vertical coupling loading; oblique loading of 200 N; hot thermal-200 N oblique coupling loading; cold thermal-200 N oblique coupling loading) were applied to simulate the hot and cold food/beverages intake.

The growth and reproduction of microorganisms are dependent on nutrient supply. Here, Milk and LB media were utilized as nutrition sources for Escherichia coli, and the changes in bacterial and secretory proteins at 3 time points (3, 9, and 18 h) in the growth cycle were studied using a label-free proteomics technique. The findings revealed that the abundances of bacterial intracellular proteins inosine/xanthosine triphosphatase and universal stress protein F increase dramatically during the growth phase in milk and LB media.
