Effective drain care and management in community settings.

Nurs Stand

Published: November 2019

The literature indicates that drain monitoring is a frequently undervalued aspect of patient care, and that the drain care provided is often inconsistent and inadequate. There are numerous potential implications of suboptimal drain care for patients, nurses, teams and healthcare organisations. Since acute care is increasingly being delivered in the community, there is a greater need for nurses to have an understanding of effective drain care. This article describes the rationale for drain insertion and its associated complications. It uses a case study to illustrate how suboptimal drain monitoring and documentation can negatively affect patient care and safety. This article also discusses several important issues raised in the case study, such as suboptimal documentation, and how these may have consequences for nurses, teams and healthcare organisations. Recognition of these elements supports initiatives that nurses could apply to practice to reduce the occurrence of similar incidents.

β-Glucan induced plasma B cells differentiation to enhance antitumor immune responses by Dectin-1.

BMC Immunol

January 2025

Laboratory of Oncology, Medical Research Center, The Second People's Hospital of Changzhou, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Changzhou, China.

Background: B lymphocytes, essential in cellular immunity as antigen-presenting cells and in humoral immunity as major effector cells, play a crucial role in the antitumor response. Our previous work has shown β-glucan enhanced immunoglobulins (Ig) secretion. But the specific mechanisms of B-cell activation with β-glucan are poorly understood.

Background: Esophageal atresia is one of the most common life-threatening congenital malformations and is defined as an interruption in the continuity of the esophagus with or without fistula to the trachea or bronchi. Definitive treatment is surgical ligation of the fistula if present and esophageal end-to-end anastomosis of the two pouches, thereby reconstructing the continuity of the esophagus. During this procedure, the surgeon may choose to either ligate or preserve the azygos vein, a major draining vein for the esophagus and surrounding structures, but no definitive consensus on the matter exists.

Shunt-Dependent Hydrocephalus After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Investigation of Prognostic Variables and Creation of a Stronger Predictive Model.

World Neurosurg

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, Emory University School of Medicine, 1365 Clifton Road NE, Ste. B6200, Atlanta, Georgia, USA 30322; Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Division of Interventional Neuroradiology, Emory University School of Medicine, 1364 Clifton Road NE, AG26, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, 30322.

Background: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is frequently complicated by permanent shunt-dependent hydrocephalus, but it is difficult to predict which patients are at highest risk.

Objective: This study seeks to identify novel variables associated with shunt dependency after aSAH and to create a predictive algorithm that improves upon existing models.

Methods: Retrospective case control design was used.
