Purpose: To review the diagnosis and the treatment of both subclinical and overt hypothyroidism in old people, which could represent a challenge for the clinicians.
Methods: Narrative literature review. An extensive literature search was performed using the databases of Scopus, Medline through PubMed, and Google Scholar from January 1975 to May 2019. The search terms were "hypothyroidism," "older adults," "elderly," and "myxedema."
Results: Hypothyroidism is more common among older subjects in comparison to the younger counterparts. The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis and its hormones undergo significant changes due to the physiological aging process. For a correct diagnosis of hypothyroidism in old people clinicians must take such age-related changes into account.
Conclusions: The administration of replacement therapy in older adults should consider frailty, polypharmacy and a high risk to develop overtreatment symptoms. On the other hand, older patients with untreated or undertreated hypothyroidism may develop a state of myxedema coma.

This observational investigation aimed to explore potential risk factors for anemia in pregnancy. Firstly, a cross-sectional study was conducted, encompassing a review of clinical data of 43,201 pregnant women admitted to the Hainan Women and Children's Medical Center between January 2017 and December 2020. Comparison between women with and without anemia in pregnancy revealed significant differences between the two groups concerning age, gestational diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, chronic hepatitis B virus infection, syphilis infection, and human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Objective: Extant imaging methods used for the proper identification of the parathyroid glands to prevent post-operative hypothyroidism associated with the resection of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) are limited by factors such as low specificity, high cost, and technical complexity. This study, therefore, sought to investigate the efficacy of the immunocolloidal gold strip method combined with nanocarbon negative imaging tracing technology for parathyroid gland imaging during radical resection of DTC in elderly patients.
Methods: A total of 100 elderly patients with DTC were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups: the control group and the observation group.

Background: The recurrence shortly after interventional therapy poses a great challenge in managing malignant central airway obstruction (MCAO). While cryotherapy has shown potential benefits when combined with immunotherapy in lung cancer, its effectiveness for improving local control of malignant central airway tumors is not well understood. This study aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of combining these strategies.
