We study theoretically the influence of viscoelasticity on the steady cone-jet mode of electrospray for small stress relaxation times. For this purpose, we numerically integrate the leaky-dielectric model together with the Oldroyd-B constitutive relationship and calculate both the base flow and linear eigenmodes characterizing its stability as a function of the governing parameters. We describe the effect of the polymeric stresses on both the cone-jet mode and the minimum flow rate stability limit. There are considerable differences between the Newtonian and viscoelastic electrospray realizations even for relatively small stress relaxation times due to the intense extensional deformation suffered by the fluid particles in the cone-jet transition region The axial polymeric stress shrinks the liquid meniscus and stabilizes it by pushing the fluid particle in the cone-to-jet transition region.

Electrospraying uses a high-voltage potential difference to create fine droplets. This study conducts a comparative analysis of the spray pattern and droplet properties using ring electrode parameters. The spray pattern and droplet characteristics are analyzed based on the experimental parameters of the ring electrode.

An electrospray operated in the steady cone-jet mode is highly stable but the operating state can shift to pulsation or multijet modes owing to changes in flow rate, surface tension, and electrostatic variables. Here, a simple feedback control system was developed using the spray current and the apex angle of a Taylor cone to determine the error signal for correcting the emitter voltage. The system was applied to lock the cone-jet mode operation against external perturbations.

The electrospraying of water in the cone-jet mode is difficult in practical applications owing to its low throughput and the electrical discharge caused by the high surface tension of water. A film with multiple dielectric micronozzles is essential for multiplexed electrospraying of water in cone-jet mode without electrical discharge. Thus, a pyramidal micronozzle film with five nozzles was fabricated using the UV-embossing process.

The electrospray process has been extensively applied in various fields, including energy, display, sensor, and biomedical engineering owing to its ability to generate of functional micro/nanoparticles. Although the mode of the electrospray process has a significant impact on the quality of micro/nano particles, observing and discriminating the mode of electrospray during the process has not received adequate attention. This study develops a simple automated method to discriminate the mode of the electrospray process based on the current signal using a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) and class activation map (CAM).

The recent proliferation of SmallSats and their use in increasingly demanding applications require the development of onboard electric propulsion compatible with the power, mass, and volume constraints of these spacecraft. Electrospray propulsion is a promising technology for SmallSats due to its unique high efficiency and scalability across the wide power range of these platforms, for example, from a few watts available in a CubeSat to a few hundred watts in a MiniSat. The implementation of electrospray propulsion requires the use of microfabrication techniques to create compact arrays of thousands of electrospray emitters.
