Challenges in airway infection models have limited the ability to explore early steps in the interactions between and the human airway epithelium. Here, we use inverted air-liquid interface cultures to demonstrate that the human airway epithelium responds to apical stimulation by to promote the transepithelial migration of neutrophils from the basolateral membrane surface to the apical airway surface. Mammalian blood cells originate from specialized 'hemogenic' endothelial (HE) cells in major arteries. During the endothelial-to-hematopoietic transition (EHT), nascent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) bud from the arterial endothelial wall and enter circulation, destined to colonize the fetal liver before ultimately migrating to the bone marrow.
