The current study aimed to detect the mutagenic impacts of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), which is produced by Aspergillus group fungi, via a high-plant genotoxicity test. Different durations of treatment (3 h, 6 h, and 12 h) were used to treat the Vicia faba root tips with varying concentrations of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) following the approved protocol for plant assays published by the International Program on Chemical Safety (IPCS) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The data obtained indicated that AFB1 not only has the ability to induce various alterations in the process of mitosis, ranging from increasing to decreasing mitotic and phase indices but also leads to many mitotic aberrations.

Brain network analysis reveals hemispheric aberrant topology in patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder.

Idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is recognized as a prodromal stage of neuro-degenerative disease. While brain network analysis is a well-documented approach for characterizing disease-related dysfunctions, the specific patterns in iRBD, particularly those related to hemispheric aberrations remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, this study investigated the topological abnormalities of multi-band EEG networks in patients with iRBD.

The EEG theta band displays distinct roles in resting and task states. Low resting theta and transient increases in frontal-midline (fm) theta power during tasks are associated with better cognitive control, such as error monitoring. ADHD can disrupt this balance, resulting in high resting theta linked to drowsiness and low fm-theta activity associated with reduced cognitive abilities.

Intra-thoracic thyroid rests: an updated classification and case series.

ANZ J Surg

December 2024

Endocrine Surgery Unit, University of Sydney, Royal North Shore Hospital, St Leonards, New South Wales, Australia.

Background: Thyroid rests are common and arise during embryological development, with aberrant descent of thyroid tissue along the thyro-thymic tract. These give rise to a range of pathologies, including goitre formation and malignancy. Thyroid rests have been graded I-IV based on their connection to the thyroid gland proper - grade I is a short protuberance, grade II & III are connected via a pedicle and fibrous band respectively, and grade IV is completely disconnected.

Article Synopsis
  • - HfO (hafnium oxide) is a promising dielectric material in electronics, noted for its ferroelectric properties since 2011, with research focusing on stabilizing its polar o-phase structure.
  • - The study involved growing non-doped HfO thin films on SrTiO substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), revealing that as film thickness increases, surface roughness also increases.
  • - Analysis techniques like atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the films' purity and structural quality, while electron microscopy studies showed the HfO/SrTiO interface is atomically abrupt and incoherent.
