Sulfonated activated carbon-based catalysts were prepared by microwaved-assisted carbonization of phosphoric acid activated corncob followed by sulfonation using concentrated sulfuric acid. Sulfonation at different temperatures and times resulted in varied SOH group density of the SAC catalysts. Sulfonation temperature showed a significant effect on the introduction of SOH on the AC precursor while time had minor role. The SAC catalysts were characterized by means of N2 sorption analysis (specific surface area, pore-volume, average pore width), FTIR spectroscopy, SEM imaging, and sulfur analysis. The impact of catalysts SOH density on the product distribution and bio-oil composition from the catalytic co-pyrolysis of Douglas fir and LDPE was evaluated. The highest bio-jet fuels (aromatics and C9-16 alkanes) obtained was 97.51% using the SAC catalyst sulfonated at 100 °C for 5 h. Results showed that SAC has great potential as catalyst in the co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastics for the production of jet-fuel range hydrocarbons.

Radioactive molecular iodine (I) is a critical volatile pollutant generated in nuclear energy applications, necessitating sensors that rapidly and selectively detect low concentrations of I vapor to protect human health and the environment. In this study, we design and prepare a three-component sensing material comprising reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as the substrate, silver iodide (AgI) particles as active sites, and polystyrene sulfonate as an additive. The AgI particles enable reversible adsorption and conversion of I molecules into polyiodides, inducing substantial charge density variation in rGO.

Granular activated carbon (GAC) and GAC modified with anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) were used as conductive materials during the anaerobic digestion of swine wastewater (SW). The electron transfer capacity (ETC) in the GAC-AQS was 2.1-fold higher than the unmodified GAC.

This study examines the biocompatibility, osteogenic potential, and effectiveness of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) composites for treating osteonecrosis, seeking to establish a theoretical basis for clinical application. A range of PEEK composite materials, including sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK), polydopamine-sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK-PDA), bone-forming peptide-poly-dopamine-sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK-PDA-BFP), and vascular endothelial growth factor-poly-dopamine-sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK-PDA-VEGF), were constructed by concentrated sulfuric acid sulfonation, polydopamine modification and grafting of bioactive factors. The experiments involved adult male New Zealand rabbits aged 24-28 weeks and weighing 2.

Oxidative stress arises from an imbalance between reactive species (RS) production and the antioxidant defense, increasing the brain susceptibility to neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. Besides, changes in the expression or activity of neurotransmitter metabolism enzymes, such as monoamine oxidases (MAO), are also associated with mental disorders, including depression. Considering this, antioxidant and MAO-A activity inhibitory potential of six 2,3-chalcogenodihydrobenzofurans (2,3-DHBF) was investigated through in vitro and in silico tests.

A ruthenium-catalyzed intramolecular cascade cyclization of allene-alkyne has been achieved. This method offers a streamlined and atom-economical approach for the construction of sulfone bearing 1-cyclopenta[]naphthalenes, an important structural scaffold that exists in biologically active compounds. Our approach, backed by mechanistic insights from deuterium labeling, DFT calculations, and potential for reaction scale-up, presents synthetic chemists with an invaluable tool for efficiently producing a distinct carbon framework in a one-pot manner.
