The grain transfer protocol presents a step-by-step guide on how to successfully transfer positioned grains from a single-grain luminescence disc to a scanning electron microscope (SEM) specimen stub and how to transport them between laboratories. Single-grain luminescence analysis allows the determination of luminescence characteristics for individual sand-sized grains. By combining such luminescence data with other grain properties such as geochemical composition, shape, or structure also at single-grain level, it is possible to investigate factors controlling luminescence signals or study other material properties. The non-luminescence properties are typically measured in another instrument; thus, grains need to be transferred between machines and sample holders, and sometimes also between laboratories. It is then important that the position of each grain is known and stable so that the properties from the same grain are compared. By providing an easily observable orientation marker on the specimen stub, the hundred numbered grains from the single-grain disc can be transferred and later identified when analyzed in the SEM.

Protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs) can operate at intermediate temperatures (450° to 600°C) for power generation and hydrogen production. However, the operating temperature is still too high to revolutionize ceramic electrochemical cell technology. Lowering the operating temperature to <450°C will enable a wider material choice and reduce system costs.

To offer guidance for using Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) to estimate UCS of heterogeneous rocks, this study uses sandstone (fine or coarse grain) and gneiss (0°, 45°, 90° inclined anisotropy) to investigate the influence of grain size or anisotropy on the correlations of UCS-BTS. According to the regression analysis, there is no significant equation of UCS-BTS for rocks with vertical anisotropy. The grain size variation or multidirectional anisotropy can result in a decrease in the determination coefficient value of correlations.

The magnetic properties of binary Gd-Cd and ternary Gd-Au-Ge crystals obtained from the newly introduced low-melt peritectic formation (LMPF) synthesis method were investigated. This method consists of a rapid quenching of the metallic melt followed by an annealing treatment at a relevant temperature. In the first system, both quasicrystal (QC) and approximant crystal (AC) phases can be stabilized, whereas only the AC phase is obtainable in the pseudo-binary Gd-(Au-Ge) system.

Tests of the uniaxial compression of single grains were performed in a specially designed press, which allowed the recording of an applied load in regard to the time and observation of occurring phenomena in a polarization assay. Three types of grains were tested: quartz sand, glass granules, and crushed glass. The strength tests showed different mechanisms of grain damage depending on the type of grain.

The gyroid structure from self-assembly is highly attractive for optical applications such as photonic crystals and metamaterials. However, due to the direction-dependent nature of these applications, achieving a monograin-level structure over a large area has remained challenging. In this study, the fabrication of unidirectionally oriented anisotropic nanocylinders of polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) is reported block copolymer thin films up to a 4-inch scale via a shear-rolling process, followed by solvent annealing to induce phase transition to nearly monograin gyroid structures.
