The family Parvoviridae includes an ample and most diverse collection of viruses. Exploring the biological diversity and the inherent complexity in these apparently simple viruses has been a continuous commitment for the scientific community since their first discovery more than fifty years ago. The Special Issue of 'Viruses' dedicated to the 'New Insights into Parvovirus Research' aimed at presenting a 'state of the art' in many aspects of research in the field, at collecting the newest contributions on unresolved issues, and at presenting new approaches exploiting systemic (-omic) methodologies.

Porcine parvovirus (PPV) infection induces germ cell death, leading to reproductive disorders in first-pregnant sows. Porcine placental trophoblast cells (PTCs) are the major target of PPV, and we have previously found that PPV infection leads to the death of PTCs by a non-apoptotic process, which may be related to PPV pathogenicity. The Z-nucleic acid-binding protein 1 (ZBP1) is often activated after virus invasion and mediates subsequent cell death.

Porcine parvoviruses one through eight (PPV1-PPV8) are prevalent in Chinese swine herds. However, the infection status of all these PPVs in slaughtered pigs is still unclarified. In this study, we detected PPV1-PPV8 in 353 tissue samples collected from slaughtered pigs from six regions of China in 2023.

Unlabelled: During infection the autonomous parvovirus minute virus of mice (MVM) generates extensive DNA damage which facilitates virus replication and induces a cellular DNA damage response (DDR) driven by the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) kinase. Atypically, the ataxia telangiectasia and Rad-3-related (ATR) DDR pathway remains inactive. Upon DNA damage ATR is normally recruited to single-stranded DNA sequences formed at genomic DNA damage sites, and while within a multiprotein complex activates, via phosphorylation, the key DDR regulator checkpoint kinase 1 (Chk1).

Objective: To determine the association between ionized calcium (iCa) and/or total magnesium (tMg) and the development of sepsis and to investigate whether iCa or tMg is associated with mortality in puppies with canine parvoviral enteritis (CPE).
Methods: 64 client-owned puppies with CPE were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. Serum iCa and tMg were measured daily from admission until death or discharge.
