In Hermitian topological systems, the bulk-boundary correspondence strictly constrains boundary transport to values determined by the topological properties of the bulk. We demonstrate that this constraint can be lifted in non-Hermitian Floquet insulators. Provided that the insulator supports an anomalous topological phase, non-Hermiticity allows us to modify the boundary states independently of the bulk, without sacrificing their topological nature. We explore the ensuing possibilities for a Floquet topological insulator with non-Hermitian time-reversal symmetry, where the helical transport via counterpropagating boundary states can be tailored in ways that overcome the constraints imposed by Hermiticity. Non-Hermitian boundary state engineering specifically enables the enhancement of boundary transport relative to bulk motion, helical transport with a preferred direction, and chiral transport in the same direction on opposite boundaries. We explain the experimental relevance of our findings for the example of photonic waveguide lattices.

Dynamic control of 2D non-Hermitian photonic corner skin modes in synthetic dimensions.

Non-Hermitian models describe the physics of ubiquitous open systems with gain and loss. One intriguing aspect of non-Hermitian models is their inherent topology that can produce intriguing boundary phenomena like resilient higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) and non-Hermitian skin effects (NHSE). Recently, time-multiplexed lattices in synthetic dimensions have emerged as a versatile platform for the investigation of these effects free of geometric restrictions.

The hybrid skin-topological effect (HSTE) has recently been proposed as a mechanism where topological edge states collapse into corner states under the influence of the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). However, directly observing this effect is challenging due to the complex frequencies of eigenmodes. In this study, we experimentally observe HSTE corner states using synthetic complex frequency excitations in a transmission line network.

Quantum Simulation of Partial Differential Equations via Schrödingerization.

Phys Rev Lett

Institute of Natural Sciences, School of Mathematical Sciences, MOE-LSC, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200240, P. R. China.

We present a novel new way-called Schrödingerization-to simulate general (quantum and nonquantum) systems of linear ordinary and partial differential equations (PDEs) via quantum simulation. We introduce a new transform, referred to as the warped phase transformation, where any linear-including nonautonamous-system of ordinary or partial differential equation can be recast into a system of Schrödinger's equations, in real time, in a straightforward way. This approach is not only applicable to PDEs for classical problems but is also useful for quantum problems, including the preparation of quantum ground states and Gibbs thermal states, the simulation of quantum states in random media in the semiclassical limit, simulation of Schrödinger's equation in a bounded domain with artificial boundary conditions, and other non-Hermitian physics.

Topology andPTsymmetry in a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain with periodic hopping modulation.

We study the effect of periodic hopping modulation in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain with an additional onsite staggered imaginary potential (of strength). Such dissipative, non-Hermitian (NH) extension amply modifies the features of the topological trivial phase (TTP) and the topological nontrivial phase (TNP) of the SSH chain, more so with the periodic hopping distribution. Generally a weak NH potential can respect the parity-time (PT) symmetry keeping the energy eigenvalues real, while a strong potential breaksPTconservation leading to imaginary edge state and complex bulk state energies in the system.

The high sensitivity of the spectrum and wave functions to boundary conditions, termed the non-Hermitian skin effect, represents a fundamental aspect of non-Hermitian systems. While it endows non-Hermitian systems with unprecedented physical properties, it presents notable obstacles in grasping universal properties that are robust against microscopic details and boundary conditions. In this Letter, we introduce a pivotal theorem: in the thermodynamic limit, for any non-Hermitian systems with finite-range interactions, all spectral moments are invariant quantities, independent of boundary conditions, posing strong constraints on the spectrum.
