Functionalized N-unsubstituted 2,2'-bipyrroles are basic building blocks for the preparation of pyrrolic macrocycles and natural products, such as prodigiosines. The aim of this review is to provide a description of the most important methodologies used to prepare 2,2'-bipyrroles and their central role as building blocks for the synthesis of porphyrinoids and property-defining structural elements therein.

Defect emitters in silicon are promising contenders as building blocks of solid-state quantum repeaters and sensor networks. Here, we investigate a family of possible isoelectronic emitter defect complexes from a design standpoint. We show that the identification of key physical effects on quantum defect state localization can guide the search for telecom-wavelength emitters.

Lead halide perovskite heterojunctions have been considered as important building blocks for fabricating high-performance photodetectors (PDs). However, the interfacial defects induced non-radiative recombination and interfacial energy-level misalignment induced ineffective carrier transport severely limit the performance of photodetection of resulting devices. Herein, interfacial engineering with a spin-coating procedure has been studied to improve the photodetection performance of CHNHPbI/SnO heterojunction PDs, which were fabricated by sputtering a SnO thin film on ITO glass followed by spin-coating a CHNHPbI thin film.

High-refractive-index (HRI) dielectrics are gaining increasing attention as building blocks for compact lasers. Their ability to simultaneously support both electric and magnetic modes provides greater versatility as compared to plasmonic platforms. Moreover, their reduced absorption loss minimizes heat generation, further enhancing their performance.

Non-covalent protein-protein interactions are one of the most fundamental building blocks in cellular signalling pathways. Despite this, they have been historically hard to identify using conventional methods due to their often weak and transient nature. Using genetic code expansion and incorporation of commercially available unnatural amino acids, we have developed a highly accessible method whereby interactions between biotinylated ubiquitin-like protein (UBL) probes and their binding partners can be stabilised using ultraviolet (UV) light-induced crosslinks.

While synthesizing circular polymers with telechelic polyolefin building blocks recently emerged as a promising strategy for addressing conventional polyethylenes' sustainability challenges, the lack of telechelic PP (PP) with sufficient difunctional purity for polycondensation has been limiting the development of circular polypropylenes with PP-like structures and properties. Here we described a combined approach of coordinative chain transfer polymerization and transition-metal-catalyzed quenching reaction with various acyl chlorides, affording PPs with a high difunctional ratio (up to ∼99%) and broad end functional group scope. The steric effect of polymeryl-Zn species and the role of Pd catalyst were revealed by DFT.
